Question about 2002 Ford Explorer

1 Answer

Headliner removal I am trying to find information on how to remove my headliner because of a strange knocking noise i am hearing on my roof when i encounter bumps or am driving on a rough road. I already checked the roof rack and it is secure. Is there any special instructions for removal I should be aware of before I start and will I be able to place the same headliner back up when done as long as i do not damage it?

I have the same problem with my 2002 Explorer. I have also checked the roof racks, overhead lights, etc. If you discover the problem, please post it here. I'm dreading removing the headliner and hope I will see a solution before I do.

I have the same problem.  It was my back window rattling.  One side came loose at the hinge.  When I opened it the window nearly came flying off.

This is not an easy repair w/o damaging the headliner. There is nothing up there except maybe a roof brace. Check the luggae rack again by trying to move all the peices. One must be loose.
there are 27 steps!
If equipped, remove the overhead console.

  1. Remove the screw and disconnect the electrical connectors
  2. If equipped, remove the electronic compass sensor.
  3. If equipped, disconnect the auto dimming interior mirror connector.
  4. Remove the interior/map reading lamp. For additional information, refer to Section 417-02 .
    • Upon installation, make sure the notch in the headliner aligns with the tab on the interior/map reading lamp bracket.
  5. Disconnect the roof opening panel electrical connector and the wire connector pin-type retainer.
  6. Remove the gimp around the roof opening panel.
    1. Remove the sun visors. For additional information, refer to Sun Visor in this section.
    1. Position aside the door opening weatherstrips
  7. NOTE: Installing the LH side sun visor clip will support front of headliner while working on headliner.
Install the LH side sun visor retainer clip.
    • Loosely install the screw.
  • Disconnect the electrical connector and the wiring pin-type retainers on the A-pillar.
    1. Release the upper B-pillar trim panel clips and position aside the upper B-pillar trim panel.
Release the C-pillar trim panel clips and position aside the C-pillar trim panel
    1. Remove the rear upper headliner trim panel.
    2. Remove the D-pillar trim panel.

      • Disconnect the electrical connectors
    2. Position aside the LH rear quarter trim panel.
    3. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
    4. Remove the pin-type retainers and the upper air duct.
      • Push down on the air duct, tilt the top outward and pull upward to remove the air duct
    5. Remove the lower air duct.
    6. Disconnect the electrical connector located at the C-pillar.
      • Release the wiring harness pin-type retainers.
    7. : To prevent damage to the coat hanger retainer, use a 3/16-inch flat-blade screwdriver for this step. Remove the third row coat hooks.
      • Open the access cover.
      • Insert a screwdriver into the coat hook slot and turn the screwdriver 90 degrees so that it engages in the plastic component slot. This will spread the steal attachment clip wings to allow the plastic component to disengage. The steal clip will stay engaged in the sheet metal.
    8. Remove the rear headliner pin-type retainer.
    9. NOTE: An assistance is required to help support the center of the headliner for the remaining steps.

      2. Remove the LH side sun visor retainer clip.
        • Open the access cover and remove the screw.
      3. NOTE: Rear seats must be folded down and front seats reclined back for this step.

How do i replace the sunroof track on my 2001 jeep grand cherroke limited? the bracket that the air deflector attaches to is broken.

You have to remove the headliner. Remove all the door column bezels and rear bezels, both sides. Remove the sun visors. Remove any dome lights and look for screws. Most headliners have plastic buttons and Velcro that hold them in place. Start in one place and work your way around to release the headliner. Being extremely careful. Because if you pull down to hard, you will crack the headliner, leaving a nice crease. Once the headliner is out, You can get to the sun roof regulator and motor.

You have a bad motor or bad connections on the motor. The motor is above the headliner. To remove the headliner you must remove everything on the headliner. Next remove all of the trim holding it in place. Carefully pry upward on one side until it is free and the rest can easly be removed.

Headliner install in 66 mustang coupe

Remove windshield and rear window to do it properly. Headliner is actually crimped in between window gaskets and roof edge. Not a job for the faint at heart. If you don't know the string trick to get your gaskets in place you'll be working on it this time next year. Look on CJ Pony parts web site. They used to have a good tech article on headliner replacement. Hope this helps...

The sun roof scrapes the roof when I open it.

The mounts for the sunroof frame are inside the headliner under the hand hold pieces. Remove those and gently pull the headliner out enough to get to the bolts. Loosen the bolts and lower the tracks slightly - not enough the sunroof doesn't seal.

Sunroof will not close think cable or chain broke? How do you get at it to fix it. I can hear the electric motor clicking.?

This can be really tricky to get at if you want it done properly and neatly. You'd have to remove all the trim on the inside of the car that covers the headliner and then slowly pull the headliner down which will be held on by Velcro fasteners and some glue. You have to be gentle as the headliner may rip if you're too rough. Once the headliner is removed, you can get to the motor and cables

How to remove a headliner from 2007 nissan panthfinder

The first thing that you will want to do is to remove any and all trim that may be around the headliner. From there you need to remove the light assembly on the roof of the car. After that you need to carefully pull the headliner off and make sure that you remember that there is a fastener of some type near the middle of the headliner. It could be velcro or some sort of adhesive. After this it should be totally down.
