Question about 1996 Ford Explorer
One night someone put oil or transmission fluid in my gas tank. without know this i tried to start my 96 ford explorer it wouldn't start and it sounded really funny. when it finally started it sounded like it was missing and like a lifter was knocking. i know this was not right cause it was running fine the night before. i started checking things when i found oil on my spark plugs. i checked my oil but the level haven't changed any from the prevous day. i noticed to i had white and black smoke coming from my tail pipe. i took my gas tank off and dumped it into a pan it was black but it also had a red tint and smelled like transmission fluid. now it seem like i have two dead cylinder but when i pull out all of my spark plugs they have gas on the ends. i put all new plugs and wire and it still seems like two cylinders are dead. all of the plug are firing i've chacked them one by one. the reason i think i have two dead cylinders is i pulled off the wires at the coilpack one by one (while it was running) and the engine didn't change when i took off two of them number 4 plug and number 6 plug.
Unless someone put a large amount of oil or trans fluid in it then it would not cause a major problem.would cause some smoke from exhaust but it would take like a gallon to make this happen. you probably have a coil going bad .

When things like that come about I would do this: flush out the tank then put some new gas in it and do it again after that I would change out the sparks plugs and then if you car does not start after that I would call a mechanic and they will help you get some ideas from what to do next.

NOW VERIFY IF THE INJECTORS ARE FIRING OR CLOGGED OR THE COIL PACK ISNT FIRING.GET A FUEL PRESSURE GUAGE & TEST LIGHT TO HELP YOU OUT.IF YOUR SURE ABOUT THAT TRANS FLUID IN YOUR GAS TANK DEFINATELY CHANGE THE GAS FILTER & PUT SOME FUEL INJECTOR CLEANER IN THE GAS.AFTER YOU FIGURE OUT YOUR PROBLEM.GOOD LUCK
