Question about 1996 Volkswagen Jetta

1 Answer

I have a 1996 vw jetta gl 2.0 4 cylinder. it all started with a rainny day. i went through a puddle, it was fine, i started car after work , it was fine it, drove a good distance and then just died out while stop and go in traffic after a while of driving. when i started it back up and put it in to drive and steped on gas pedal it died out again. retried to start but would not start. tried this a few times and then i had it towed home and in the morning it stared right up and drove. some people said it was my distribitor cap. it changed it and the distribitor rotor, along with spark plugs and wires. some people said it was my fuel pump. did not change fuel pump because car started so i could rule out fuel pump. but later that day, the car tach started to go from 10 to 0 and back up and down and then the temp, fuel guages went from working to not working along with flickering dash lights, example, brake, oil, temp, battery, etc all flickering randomly. the clock reset and I turned car off and back on and every thing was back to normal except for clock. Please help me............ what would be the sources of my problems so i can fix it. could it be my fuel pump or something else...

We had an intermittent dieing problem. Worse when the weather was worse. The coil was cracked and shorting itself out intermittently on a rivet.

My 1996 VW Jetta GL starting leaking fluid two days ago, and a lot was coming out. I assumed it was oil and made an appt to get it looked it. However, when checking my oil's dipstick it says it's...

first the car didn`t stooped leaking it is simply the transmission lubricant is lost all of it
if you didn`t hit a road bump or something underneath
probably it will be the oil sealing and/or universal joints .

I assume you man the Radio code? Take your VIN number to the VW dealer and they will give you the code.

pop off the distributer cap and dry it out well. Put it back on and it should work. This happened to my 97 jetta too...also if I go through large puddles at a quick speed this may happen too. There isn't good electrical contact with the moisture.
