Question about 1996 Volkswagen Cabrio

96 jetta please help

I have a 1996 vw jetta gl 2.0 4 cylinder. it all started with a rainny day. i went through a puddle, it was fine, i started car after work , it was fine it, drove a good distance and then just died out while stop and go in traffic after a while of driving. when i started it back up and put it in to drive and steped on gas pedal it died out again. retried to start but would not start. tried this a few times and then i had it towed home and in the morning it stared right up and drove. some people said it was my distribitor cap. it changed it and the distribitor rotor, along with spark plugs and wires. some people said it was my fuel pump. did not change fuel pump because car started so i could rule out fuel pump. but later that day, the car tach started to go from 10 to 0 and back up and down and then the temp, fuel guages went from working to not working along with flickering dash lights, example, brake, oil, temp, battery, etc all flickering randomly. the clock reset and I turned car off and back on and every thing was back to normal except for clock.

Please help me............ what would be the sources of my problems so i can fix it. could it be my fuel pump or something else...

Pretty much described my problem exactly. I don't know what the hell it is. I have spark but now the engine won't start at all. Could it be as simple as a fuel filter?

I fixed my problem by installing a new ignition coil....even though I had spark! I guess the spark was weak or something because I went back and forth between new and old ignition coils testing it and with the old one it wouldn't start and with the new one it runs great. Cost $109 :(

I believe autozone can scan your car and get the codes. If you can get the codes than you can find a forum like vwvortex.com and ask around. Make sure to search. The 2.0 liter forum there is pretty helpful.

Dont throw money at it until you've done all the little tricks you've found on the internet. The coilpack could be bad. It gets cracks in it, moisture can get in it and keep the sparks from going to the wires. You can take a spray bottle and spray water near the coil (the black box that connects to the distributor.) If you see sparks than it's most likely the coil pack.

You can get good deals on parts at germanautoparts.com

We had an intermittent dieing problem. Worse when the weather was worse. The coil was cracked and shorting itself out intermittently on a rivet.

Hi,
I cannot see any problem with that. Common to use compression fittings to splice the different sections of line together.
