Question about 1996 Pontiac Grand Prix

1 Answer

95 grand prix wont start after engine warms up

The car starts fine when cold, no grinding or any other unusual noises like its a starter problem. once the car reaches temp you can shut the car off and it wont crank the starter . there anre no noises at the starter when you try to start it, but when you turn the key there is a single click that comes from near the battery at the jump terminal. im a mechanic by trade but i specialise mostly on dodge and chrysler products but am trained on other mfg models, but this one has me stumped is sounds like a bad solenoid switch but i cant find one.

Sounds like a hot soak issue with the starter.I bet the starter needs replacing. The only other cause I can think of is maybe the starter lost a heat shield. I am not sure, however, if it actualy has one as OEM or not.

Yes, you are probably right about the spacer or shim. A salvage yard should have lots of them for little or nothing. When you remove the starter for the spacer, check the drive gear end of the starter for severe wear. If it is chewed off very bad, have a new drive gear put on, or replace the starter.
