If you overhauled the engine and replaced the timing chain & gears, as long as you installed them properly and have installed the ign wires in the right places, the distributor is "locked in place" and is non adjustable (unless you are me, but that's another story) Computer makes all timing changes.

1984 jeep cj7 258 bad distributor cool ?

Do you mean the coil?
I'm not sure what year they started using the Ford computer on the 258, but I can say that the distributer has both vacuum and mechanical advance on it, so you can (maybe not 100% legally) bypass it. Get an MSD 6 with magnetic pickup and use that. Jeep will run better than new.
BTW, the only way a coil goes bad is if it overheats and melts the plastic around the wires. Check with volt-Ohm meter to be sure.

What size battery is Best for a 1984 Jeep CJ7?

If it has the 4.2 engine they say it takes the group54 if its the 2.5 engine it uses the group 55 but i would use a interstate or another brand and use group 56 like a interstate megatron # MT 56.

My knowledge is the only difference between the two engine is the stroke length the blocks r the same size I would call quadretec to be sure to make sure you don't need any major mode upgrades.

1978 CJ7 No power and back fires when accelerated.

Timing should advance when accelerated. You have the vac on the distributor hooked to manifold vacuum. It needs to be on ported vacuum. And your base timing could be higher. I would set it at ten degrees.

Wherever you can find a threaded port in the cooling system should work,as long as it is the same thread as your sending unit.If you cannot find a compatible threaded port,you may have to go to a hardware store and find some fittings that will adapt your sending unit to whatever threaded port is available.If you can not find one,most engine blocks have two (one on each side) threaded plugs for the water jacket.If you have to,locate the sending unit there with appropriate adapters.And as a last resort,you could purchase an aftermarket temp gauge and use it,as it comes with an assortment of adapters/fittings.
