Question about 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 Club Cab

1997 Dodge Ram 1500 Transmission Shifts Slow

I have a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 with a 360, and the transmission which has been rebuilt twice in the past 3 years. The first problem was it wouldnt shift at all so i paid $800 to rebuild(i removed and reinstalled) then a few months later reverse went out so i paid $1200 to have it rebuilt(better shop, they did all the work), now 2 yrs later it is slow to shift. It starts out good in first then i have to let off and it will shift to second, but then when i let off agian it usually takes 30 sec of feathering gas to get it into 3rd and then it shifts to o.d. perfect......and when at highway speeds 40-100 if i push the gas to the floor it will shift straight to 2nd and redline if i'm going 75 or so and wont shift out till i let off......please any info you might have is much appriciated.....If you have any questions or answers my e-mail is thank you.

My 1996 Dodge 1500 is very hard to get it to shift into 3rd or overdrive. I have to move the gear selector to second and rev the engine. On the freeway it acts lke it is dropping back into second but finally goes into third. If you stop it does the same thing again,

I have the same problem but on a 1997 Ram 4x4 ext. cab. It had a transmission put in when I bought the truck by a transmission shop. After 2 months I had to take it back in to the same shop for repairs they said it was the transducer needing to be replaced. My year warranty ran out on the trucks transmission and then the transmission started acting up again. Wasn't wanting to shift to second and had to really give it gas to get it to take off into 1st gear. This is an automatic transmission and it would work out better if I would manually shift it myself into 2nd then 3rd then drive. When coming to a stop it didn't want to shift down to 1st. I would have to do this myself also. I love the truck but I have had transmission problems ever since I bought it.
How hard is it to rebuild this transmission myself and where can you find a cheap rebuild kit? Any help would be appreciated.

Have you changed the fluid and filter every 2 yrs or 36k miles?
Are you using atf+4 only?
If all the above are a yes then check the throttle cable to the transmission as it should be adjusted to move at exactly the same as the throttle and it they are out of adjustment the transmission will not shift at the correct time and wil eventually cause early failure, also after a rebuild the tranny has to be reflashed by a dealer

97 was a bad year for Chrysler transmissions. Most of these transmissions have already been replaced or rebuilt. My best answer is your are the victim of poor engineering among the many other owners that where in the same situation with these vehicles.

I hate to tell you but it sounds like your transmission was rebuilt incorrectly and need to be corrected or tossed and start anew, new transmissions for your truck are roughly $1,600. I'm sorry to hear about your problem.

1500 automatic bought from guy says trans was rebuilt shifts ok but when you tromp it sometimes its kicks down goes like hell then tranny slips I backoff and it is fine

I would recommend that you drop the pan and change the fluid and filter, and in place of a quart of transmission fluid, I would run some Lucas transmission oil/fluid that is specifically designed to free up a sticky valve body, and eliminate slipping.

1997 Dodge Ram 1500 ( transmission )

I also have a 97 Ram that did the same thing. First thing to do is add a trans cooler and remove the rubber lines at the radiator. If you feel the truck takes off in 2nd gear you need to replace the transducer and governor pressure switch inside the trans pan on the pass side of the valve body.
