Sounds like the fuel line is either severed or leaking. As the pressure builds up when reving or accelerating more fuel is probably being forced out & less getting to the engine. Have you noticed a drop in economy too?

normally what it is its not the power steering reservour itself but the hose has gone bad fill it back up with fluid put the cap back on and while the car is running turn the wheel left and right several times and this will get the air out of the system and at the same time help you find the leak

SOURCE: bmw m3 2003wont start

For about the last 20 years or so, most cars are equipped not to start if you press on the gas while turning the key. This is used for diagnostic purposes. DO NOT press on the gas peddle while attempting to start a fuel injected car.

I smelt petrol outside of my car when I started it up never drove it just revved it a couple of times as it was cold and not driving it today is that normal

Should put it up on a hoist and check all fuel lines coming out of gas tank going to the carburetor. All it takes is a fine crack to ooze fuel out but not see it run. Check and see if there is moisture any place and take your finger and swipe the moisture and smell it. I have seen a simple thing as the line came loose from the carbs. and needed to be tightened up.

I have a 2003 freelander that smells of petrol whilst driving ive heard of this problem before but nwhat is the cause

Hi Paul:
The smell of petrol means that there is unburned fuel somewhere.
That is not good, and could be very bad, especially if it ignited.

I sincerely hope that you are not smelling this inside the vehicle while you are driving it.

Without running through a list of every possibility that I can think of, I'll make some suggestions.
1) When you smell the petrol, immediately pull over and shut the engine off. Lift the hood to access the engine and try to find the leak. Look at hoses, connections, fuel delivery components, gaskets. Look for wet spots, stains, wash marks where petrol may have moved dust and then evaporated.

Patience and a bit of time, and you should find it.

I'm also guessing that this is an external leak since you did not mention lack of power or backfiring.

Another possible is a failed hose connected to the fuel tank, or a faulty tank vent.

It's up to you. You're now detective Sherlock of the Petrol patrol.

Why doses my car smell of petrol now and then when I am driving ?

Chances are the smell is coming from a fuel leak around the engine.
The air vents pull air in from the engine compartment, especially when the car is moving.

HAIRLIKE FIBRES COMING OUT OF EXHAUST

The most common source of the hair fibers and the smell is a defective catalytic converter.
And if it failed it could cause excessive pressure in the exhaust as well as the engine.
Its also possible something happened to the engine and damaged the converter.

I drive 3181 N42 02 Reg. I'v been told the car has oil leak, jus yesterday whilst driving I could smell something like burning metal and a particular noise I don't know where it is coming from. Please...

Let an auto tech look at it because one way or the other it's going to end up on some tech's hands. Burning oil smell must be from the valve cover leak and dripping on top of the hot exhaust manifold burning it. The only time I smelled burning metal odor was from a smelting plant. It had an acidic smell that going to put you in tears.
