Ok...you mentioned that there is no spark coming from the coil when it's in no start...Is there power from the alternator going to the coil?
One other item...If the timing chain is worn and stretched, it is possible that the cam sensor and crank sensor are out of phase with each other, just enough where a temperature difference will change starting ability.
One question...while in no start, have you tried changing the throttle position while cranking to see if it lights at part or 3/4 throttle?

Timing Chain, Sprockets, Front Cover and Seal REMOVAL & INSTALLATION 2.5L and 4.0L Engines

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Negative battery cable
    • Accessory drive belt
    • Cooling fan and shroud
    • Crankshaft damper
    • Front crankshaft seal
    • Accessory brackets
    • Front cover
    • Oil slinger
  3. Rotate the crankshaft so that the timing marks are aligned. Fig. 1: Timing chain alignment marks — 2.5L and 4.0L engines 7924pg20.gif

  4. Remove the timing chain and sprockets. To install:
  5. For 2.5L engines, turn the timing chain tensioner lever to the unlock (down) position. Pull the tensioner block toward the tensioner lever to compress the spring. Hold the block and turn the tensioner lever to the lock (up) position. Fig. 2: Timing chain tensioner — 2.5L engines 7924pg19.gif

  6. Install the timing chain and sprockets with the timing marks aligned. Tighten the camshaft sprocket bolt to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm) for 2.5L engines or to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm) for 4.0L engines.
  7. For 2.5L engines, release the timing chain tensioner.
  8. Install or connect the following:
    • Oil slinger
    • New front crankshaft seal to the front cover
    • Front cover, using a new gasket
    • Timing Case Cover Alignment and Seal Installation Tool 6139 in the crankshaft opening to center the front cover Fig. 3: Timing Case Cover Alignment and Seal Installation Tool 6139 — 2.5L and 4.0L engines 7924pg21.gif

  9. Tighten the front cover bolts as follows:
    1. Step 1: Cover-to-block 1⁄4 inch bolts to 60 inch lbs. (7 Nm)
    2. Step 2: Cover-to-block 5⁄16 inch bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm)
    3. Step 3: Oil pan-to-cover 1⁄4 inch bolts to 85 inch lbs. (9.5 Nm)
    4. Step 4: Oil pan-to-cover 5⁄16 inch bolts to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm)
  10. Install or connect the following:
    • Accessory brackets
    • Crankshaft damper. Tighten the bolt to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm).
    • Cooling fan and shroud
    • Accessory drive belt
    • Negative battery cable
  11. Start the engine and check for leaks.

SOURCE: I have a 94 jeep

check the ADS relay in the power center under the hood, swap out that relay for another on to see if it'll start-did you check to see if you have a signal at the crank sensor harness (should be about 5-7 volts)?

1997 f150 4.2 was running fine, then without warning, shut down and won't start

If it cranks good but won't start, have a helper crank it while you visually check for spark at the plugs. If spark everywhere, use a gage and check proper fuel pressure and fuel injector pulse.
Any applicable trouble codes?
Do you have a security system on this vehicle?

My 1998 Saturn,155,000 miles, began missing. OBD code #3 cylinder misfire. I verified spark to all 4 cylinders. Fuel pump runs. I did compression test. Ok After compression test, engine will not start.

Make sure the battery has a full charge. Sometimes with a lot of testing/cranking, it will run the battery down.
If you still have spark at all the plugs, use a gage and check proper fuel pressure, engine cranking. I've seen fuel pumps that would run, but, wouldn't make good fuel pressure. Also, check fuel injector pulse, engine cranking. Any applicable trouble codes?

Vehicle starts, drives about a mile and shuts down. Restarts after setting for several hours.

What is year--make--model? If computer controlled, did you check for applicable codes? If your obd2 some of the national brand auto stores will check codes for free.

Have you had the computer checked for trouble codes, that would be the first step.If you have then start testing separate componets, coil, ignition module, etc.

1992 isuzu pickup,2.6 engine , surges up and down after 10 minutes then shuts off

1992, PICKUP, in USA? what country , ? cars are not same all over earth. sorry.
engine surges, then stalls. correct.>?

nice testing , rare here, real nice !!!!
spark good as it stalls
so if engine is ok, compression, (seems cat is not melted with 20 " HG)
is flooding or starving for fuel,.
one or the other, you can find that out.
if spark timing was ok, then the belt did not slip. on cam)
leaving only fuel issues.
so DO the magic , WOT, cranking trick this trick (logic in ECU)
cuts the injectors dead, cranked, to unflood all engine with EFI.
do that?
check spark tips, for 3 to 4 hours dead.? be next
2.6L (is 4 cylinder.) is cam belt drive, i never fail to check it first
the fail, at 60k miles, all do. all rubber band engines do.,

if all this is ok, not flooding
one can start engine with test fuel, and even keep it running
even with (hint) fuel pump relay pulled.
if that works, the fueling is wrong.
injectors leaking,? ?
if only one spark tip is wet , soaking in fuel, Injector issues.

when it stalled pull all 4 plugs and look at the tips.
(if cam is timed right) be super super first thing, on this 4 banger.

My 1995 chevy tahoe runs good until my check gages light comes on

unfortunately on this type of service (internet) it is hard to deterine what is causing the check lamp to come on.........but the reason it is running bad is a thing called "limp home" mode. previuosly, if cars had a fault that was serious enough, the computer would shut the car down, having it to be towed
these days the limp home mode was established, because if the car was driven with the fault, then it would cause excessive damage.

my advice would be to take it to a chevy dealership and get them to diagnose ONLY, then come back and we will share what we can do with it

Sometimes everything electrical for the gages goes dead.I chased it down to the dash fuse.checked with a test lite the fuse is dead on both sides of it.I relaced the fuse box and it began working about 5...

you have a relay thats getting hot and shutting off thats why you have the click. you may have a bad fusible link. do you have an after market radio in the vehicle if so make sure that its not wired to a circuit thats connected to the dash. hope this helps you.

2001 jeep grand cherokee 4.0 engine shuts off

it is possable/likely a bad ECTS (engine coolant tep. sensor), this can cause the injectors to allow to much fuel into cylinders and cause a low compression and or flooding situation, good luck, marty
