Question about Jeep Cherokee

1 Answer

I have a 1999 Jeep Cherokee with a squeal when it first started and its cold. I was told that its the bearing in the distributor and I needed to replace the distributor. Does this sound likely, and do you have to replace the entire distributor or can just the bearing be replaced?

These other possibilities have been ruled out. A repair shop said that it is the distributor by listening to the engine with a scope.

It can be just a serpentine belt. If its just few moments in cold weather it needs some time to make alternator and water pump to run. If its not tight enough it can slippering for a moment. Check
if you will have it longer or in wet weather etc.
Also might be alternator is getting old and it might stuck for a first momen when you activate the engine. You might go to Autozone and check for free if the battery getting ebnough charge from alternator.
Good Luck

Hi, check your pulley bearings, but if you have had the belts checked the mechanic should have picked up on that.

Squeal while accellerating in 1995 jeep grand cherokee

The idler pulleys on the Cherokees are known to squeal and make noises when their bearings are bad. They are also known to eventually break off and disable the vehicle, if not replaced when they're bad.

Just bought a 1999 4wd jeep grand cherokee with 215k miles on it, what is some things i should do/replace to this jeep?

Check all the fluids and make sure they are good. i.e. diffs. oil, transmission, coolant, transfer case fluid, air filter. Use high mileage oil. Check the belt for cracks, usually it will start squealing a bit when it needs to be replaced. Tightening it will not help.

My 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee has a rattling noise coming from the gearbox, almost sounds like a worn release bearing on a manual box. The noise only appears after 1-2 min after cold start. Gearbox further...

If you notice a change in the rattle, when you depress the clutch pedal it is most likely in the clutch,or the linkage. The release bearing will most often have a squeal or a hissing sound. The clutch fork can rattle, if the ball pivot retainer is broken. You may feel some unwanted slack in the clutch opperation, and you may be able to adjust this out,but maybe not, with a hydraulic clutch.

Tech says serpentine belt needed to be replaced. after changing the belt 2 more times, still cannot use air conditioner or defrost due to loud squealing from belt and it pulls power down from alternator....

Your vibration damper may be going bad!
It sounds like a belt problem....but isnt load sensitive right? Yeah....that's what they sound like. Especially the part where they squeal on start up.

Have the tensioner replaced too just in case.

My 1999 jeep cherokee belt squeals very loud when giving it gas and chirps a little when idleing

If you get the squealing noise even when car is not running, and if noise get louder when you push the accelerator pedal, then it is the serpentine belt.

You may need to put the belt in tension, or to replace it.
