I have a 94' lexus, it's been running smooth but all of a sudden the engine won't crank at all. All the interior lights and dash come on but when i turn the key nothing happens.

If you have strong headlights, you may have a bad starter relay. Turn on the headlights hi beams. THEN have somebody try to start the car (crank) it. If the headlights DIM significantly, you have a bad battery (how old IS the battery). Check the terminals, and if it is a maintenance free battery, look for a manufacturing date. It's probably 4 or more years old. Remove the battery and take it to an auto parts store (O'Reilly, Advance, Checker, Auto Zone, etc) and they can test it. You won't be charged to test it but they will have to try and charge it first to test load capability, etc. IF the battery checks out OK, you may have a bad alternator that isn't sufficiently charging the battery. But my guess is that you just have a bad battery. If the headlights do NOT DIM when you try to crank it and NOTHING happenes, NO CLICK, etc, then the starter relay is bad or the connection to the starter is bad. A bad starter can also mimick this problem, but start with the easy solutions first, like a bad battery. Good luck!

Turn key get nothing jump starter and sylenoid just spins

i cant dope out that symptoms.

does it crank or not. be clear there.

no car starts (but my 6sp) if it dont crank.

on A/T cars cranking is a first thing. so does it.?

Solenoids do not spin, the stroke only , it a linear motion.

the Sol. moves the pinion and the main contactor switch only.

my guess is the Starter spins and the crank don\'t spin,

you hear the starter motor spin up, it sings. like bird.

that means the starter /solenoid are bad. (crude)

if the battery is good and or jumper starting off a running car.

It can just be a dirty starter pinion, clean it , repeat.

fixed many for this. i have.

battery cable lugs clean, and good. no green rust.

bad cable usually just make a loud THUNK sound. no spin.

1st thought is. If you can get at the starter motor with a small hammer,or something, have somone hold the key on "start" and tap the motor,if it cranks ,it's a starter brush broblem.

If your valve body is stuck open or closed, would that cause your car to not turn over???

If no movement of the engine happens at all, then please check the following:

1) Battery voltage. You should have 12.5 volts and over. Try turning on the headlights and cranking. If they dim considerably, then your battery is likely flat and may need charging/replacing.

2) Battery voltage is fine, but nothing happens: Is there a clicking when you turn the key? If so, then check the starter motor. It's likely failed.

3) Battery voltage is fine, but there is no clicking when I turn the key. Check voltage to the starter motor solenoid on the top of the motor. If it is receiving power when you turn the key to crank, yet not moving/engaging, then replace it.

4) Battery is fine, but no power to starter motor and/or solenoid. Check all battery connections, leads and connections to the motor and engine body.

My 2004 pontiac grand prix gt wont start when i went to turn it on this morning to go to work nothing happened it just made a clicking noice. The guy at pep boys said that the battery was good. when i try...

if you turn headlights on and turn key to start do you hear clicking? if so starter is possibly bad, lets trouble shoot your problem.suggest you check the fuses under hood in black box, make sure those are good. when you turn the key, you should hear at least a click or else the starter is not drawing current.try turning the headlights on and at same time turn the key and try to start, if lights go dim the starter is drawing current, does it click? if so then bad starter. if no noise at all,,still could be a bad starter.suggest that you remove the starter and have it checked out.also make sure the car is in park for sure before you do any of this. hope this helps!!

How do you know when your starter on your car is about to give out? it wont turn left me stranded once again!

First make sure the battery in in good confition and fully charged. Turn on the headlights and have someone attempt to start the car whilst you observe the headlights. If they go dim, the starter could be poling and drawing too much current. If you can, feel the starter motor, it should not be hot unless you have tried many times to start. If quite hot, headlights are dim and engine wont crank over, recheck the battery and if ok, overhaul the starter motor.

1987 F150 302 ci. EFI, Automatic, Was running good. Next morning NOTHING! Wouldn't start or crank over? Just clicking and buzzing, Headlights OKAY. Tried jump starting... NO GOOD. Took battery in... Was...

try over riding the starter relay on the fender ,it has one there right?. dont go to a mechanic yet. the engine aint seized. if it doesnt have this relay then i would get the alternator tested. if you want to test it yourself it can be costly for the right equip. autozone usually tests for free. i dont know were you live so if theres not an autozone. let me know if you cant get it tested.

Wont start

Let's start with the basics. The fact that no lights come on indicates that the battery is not making a good connection. The positive cable at the battery has an unusual "double layer" connection and sometimes white corrosion can build up in there. Use a wire brush or emery cloth and scrub out any rust, corrosion, etc and spray with WD40.
Even a small amount of corrosion can cause a battery to malfunction.
Check the ground cable also and make sure connections are not loose anywhere.
Once you've made sure the battery is good, and the positive and negative cable connections are clean and good, try to start the car with the headlights on. Have someone watch the headlights when you turn the key.
If the headlights nearly go dead, your battery is weak. If the headlights don't flicker at all, you have a bad battery connection somewhere because there is no draw from the starter. If your headlights dim somewhat and you hear a clicking, or the car barely cranks, or nothing else happens, the starter or solenoid may be at fault. I really can't go beyond this point until you make sure the battery is strong and has good, clean tight connections. Try a known good side-post battery out of another car if you have doubts about your own. Hope this helps.
