If the strut has just a ball socket and the clip, take a small flathead screw driver and pick the clip up. If it comes off, just slide it back over when you get the strut in place. The clip just holds it in place during use. No big deal and not a stupid question....cautious!

Only happened today.....the boot door will not stay open, the arms don't seem to be doing anything? How do I resolve this please

If you are talking about the upper tailgate, one or both gas struts have lost pressure. They can the regassed but the cost of replacements is reasonable and a better option. To remove a strut, use a small flat blade screwdriver to prise up the lock tabs than just pull the strut off the pin. Also prise up the lock tabe when fitting the new one

How to replace liftgate support rod fro 2005 jeep grande cherokee

Hi ... You need two people, two new gas struts a small screw driver and a thirteen mill open end spanner.....
Change one at a time with the second person supporting the tailgate, dependant on what type is fitted the struts will have a metal "c" clip that needs to be removed at both ends on the ball joint sockets, prise the clips out and remove the strut, and replace in reverse order.... if you have the struts with the ball and sockets at each end you need to support the tailgate with your by now long suffering partnre and undo the nut and socket in the body and tailgate.... they, once loosened will come out easily..... just make sure that when refitting you dont cross threads... repeat same on the other side and then give friend a cold beer..... hope this helps..... How to replace the tailgate strut for a 2005 grand cherokee? (i can't get it off the bearing)

Most hood and trunk struts have a pull out clip located on the strut...this must be pulled out to release the strut from the bearing with no damage...you might inspect the replacement strut for this clip as it is included in the new part...

How do you replace tailgates struts?

I beieve they just pull off. I think they have spring clips holding them on. There is no danger of them having a lot of pressure against the rod when the door is fully open.

I just went to open the tailgate on my relatively new Honda CRV and it will not stay open. It is like dead weight.

the gas struts that hold the door up appear to have failed... they are (relatively) easy to replace.

Boot cannot keep opening every time ope the boot . i have to keep hold boot with one hand .

I think on the ford focus the boot has a spring that is set up to pull the boot up when you open it.

If your boot is not staying open it may be that the spring has either come off or broken. I think there may be a spring either side. One way to check the set up so you know what your looking for would be to go to a dealership and look at a new car - look around - tell them your just looking if they ask and the open the boot and check the spring attachments. When you go back to your own car check to see if the same springs are in place. If one is missing then at least you know what you need.
You can go to the Service desk in the dealership and order the spring or at least check how much it is.
