1989 you could have on of 3 transmissions a 3 speed C6 trans? Check Vacuum at modulator no vacuum no shift, also kickdown cable stuck in passing gear would case this. AOD trans throttle pressure cable not connected or out of adjustment. E4OD If you replace it and the replacement unit has the updated MLPS you would need to rewire yours to match, the connector on the right side of the trans my have sleeve on it so it won't push all the way in remove sleeve and reconnect also bad wiring early wiring falls apart.

Re-check all cable, shift rods, and safety neutral switch for proper adjustment.

Ever tried to start a normal automatic in drive or reverse? Ya it should have one. Try ( autozone.com ) and either look up the part to see what your looking for, or click on repair section for specs etc on it.

When warmed up trans slips in 1st gear from stop

There will be no plug you have to drop the transmission pan. But the real issue may be 1st gear is failing so be prepared for a transmission rebuild before it completly goes out.

1989 ford ranger automatic transmission

Your truck has a A4LD transmission. The older ones had major problems. What i believe is happening with yours is the converter is locking up intermittently. 1st-4th are actual gears for 5th(overdrive) the converter locks. I had the same problem as well as did alot of people I spoke with. I solved it by getting a used A4LD out of a '92 ranger with a 3.0L motor (these transmissions had some upgrades to deal with a number of problems including the one you are talking about.) You will need to swap bell-housings (this requires the pump to be shimmed properly,I paid a shop $100 to install the pump ,with is attached to the back of the bell-housing) There are only 2 kinds of A4LD one for floor shift and 1 for column shift, make sure you get the right one.Good luck.

Either: Your low on transmission fluid, you need to replace the filter, or there's something wrong with the transmission.

Hi. It is not over for the transmission. But it is for the clutch system inside. Yes, the automatic transmissions got clutch(es) inside as well, they just work with the principle of centrifugal force. Once 1st gear reaches max rev, 2nd gear engages due to the mechanical energy generated inside, so forth and so on, ergo moving gears back and forth depending on speed. The trans repair costs for this camry should be around $500-$800 plus the ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid). This repair, plus the adequate ATF, most preferably toyota ATF, will give your transmission life another 120,000 miles when 30,000 mile checks are made on time. Hope this will help.
