Question about 1996 BMW 318
This was days and days ago so the engine is dry, i would think?
Check that there is no water in the h/t leads (spark plug leads)
then follow them back to a disy cap its kind of pull this of spray some wd40 or equivalent water dispersing spray into it and wip out properly this should solve your problem.
NEVER CLEAN A ENGINE IT IS NOT GOOD FOR THEM

If you got water in your engine and then ran it, that is not a good thing, no matter if its dry now or not you probably have some damage to your engine.
