What, is wrong with my suv. It is a automatic. My gear shifter on the steering wheel seems as if it is broke. It moves across the gears but wont go into reverse, drive, neutral,?

it probably did the gear selector has a cable attached to it that runs down to transmission --the cable can become disconnected [plastic clips]due to age wear or damaged by debris look under vehicle and check cable and connector also check the connection at the column

My 1995 ford contour will not move forward or in reverse in gear

Check your Transmission Fluid, if it has a burnt smell you are going to need a rebuild. If it is the right level and clean check to make sure that the shifter is actually shifting the transmission by watching the shift selector lever on the transmission while someone shifts the gear shift inside the car.

pull the turret again and check the positioning of the selector rails . Check that you have the gear lever in the right way around . Check that the gear lever is not fouling on the edge of the hole in the floor and preventing the lever moving far enough to the 1-2 position. Position of rear engine mount on cross member.

Basically if you can get gears then there is nothing wrong in the box or the gear lever installation because if the selector shaft were not positioned correctly you would not the gears you have as the dedent ball between shifter rails will not allow any more than 1 gear at a time.

Automatic not changing gears

check the shifter mechanism for binding up and not moving freely into positions. Not starting in park but in neutral indicates something is out of alignment with the shifter. May just need cleaning and a bit of oil/grease to fix.

Shifting lever moves inside truck but its not shifting trans. just happened, shut the truck off working fine, got out of work , not working ?

The lever is connected to linkage which inputs gear selection into the transmission via a shaft. Have a man sit in the vehicle and move the gear selector gently through its range while you observe from underneath. If the linkage has become disconnected from that shaft you may be able to fix this yourself. If however the linkage is good, then you should have a transmission shop look at it. If the linkage is not moving at all then I would pull the console out and take a look at the bottom of the gear selector. Do not have the engine running please, this is why you cannot let a woman sit in the car while you are underneath it.

Hello drtonyg... This is an electronic shifter controler on the C230...Almost every time they fail the shifter assy. needs replaced as a whole unit....There have been some techs that have tried to clean and repair the shifter assembly and reuse it but most attempts fail..You can disconnect the shift linkage from the shifter assembly underneath the vehicle and then see if your shifter moves all the way(this would eliminate any shifter assembly failures)
Good luck, i hope this helps...please rate me a fixya.

94 honda accord hard to shift from park

You seem to have two (2) separate problems one may be a BAD brake light switch this switch is mounted at the top of BRAKE pedal and control the locking mechanism on gear shifter(safety component-for example if a kid is sitting in seat with vehicle running he/she will NOT be able to put vehicle in gear without stepping on brake). The other problem is a BAD shifter cable-this cable moves the selector in the transmission when you move shift knob. Good luck and thanks for using FIX YA
