I just replaced the engine in my 2001 mitsubishi eclipse due to the timing break breaking and ruining my engine. Unfortuantely, I had to put a used engine because I just could not afford a new one at the time. It has been about 3 weeks since I had my car back from the shop.
Everything seem to be going great for the first week and 1/2. Then while drving down the road, my speedodometer starting going crazy! It was going up & down & struggling to stay afloat. The check engine light then came on. The car was still running great, so I could not figure out what was happening. I called my mechanic & after taking the car back to him, it was determined to be the speed sensors that was causing this, (so he said). Therefore another $324.00 later, I replaced all of the sensors (input & output). Then again everything seemed to be going fine for about another week.
All of the sudden, i am on my way to work and my dash lights start flickering in and out, only certain lights were lit up. My blinkers would not work ( not even make a sound). Again, called my mechanic, he said check your fuses, but unless the car starts driving funny it should be OK. So , I went onto work. On my way home, my radio started going in & out & my ac cutting on and off, my electrical lights in the car were going on & off. But, engine seemed to be running fine, windows rolled up & down, etc and I had headlights. I made it home and told my husband. We went back outside to look at the car & it would not crank! Luckly, I was in my driveway and got to miss a towtruck ride this time.
Please help, I am at witts end. The shameful thing is, I love my car, but it is driving me crazy!!!!!
What in the world could it be now????
Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.
Re: electrical problems in 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse
Hi,
I had the same problem. It seems that multi purpose fuse (#13, 10A) blown out. And this fuse its part of the charging diagram system and also from meter gauges system. So I discovered that the speed sensor harness was the problem.
Try to look for it and replace it ( its under the big air filter hose).

OK, the correct interval for the replacement of the timing belt for this model is every 60,000 miles. if the belt hasn't been changed, i would do so asap. it may be to late considering that it has started to rattle.
The timing belt can become damaged before it actually breaks, in return, causing valve timing to shift. this will cause the valves to tap the pistons during the idle.
This will run you about 1100 dollars at the dealership plus, they will also replace any push rods if need.
You can take your car to Auto Zone and they will scan the codes for FREE. They will also let you know the part causing the problem. 99% of the time it's a sensor that you may be able to replace yourself if your handy with cars. Without the codes, it's random guessing to fix the problem.
I believe that you have what is called an 'interference engine', that means that if the timing belt breaks, the valves hit the pistons, and basically, the engine is junk at that point, as it would cost more to attempt to fix than to purchase a used or rebuilt engine.
you don't have to remove the whole front end, some one is yanking your chain when you lift the hood there is three mounting bolts that attach the headlight assembly to the body remove those and then you are going to want to position your hands on the top and side of the headlight giving a gentle tug there is a clip on the bottom of the headlight that is what you are trying to break free good luck let me know what happens
