99 taurus running rough smells funny light flashing

My 99 taurus has been good Im a single mom & not real mechanically inclined living on a vary low fixed income.  Car was fine when I shut it off ( it was late ) hours later I started it & immediately it began running rough as if it didn't want to run like it was cold. In a hurry to get my **** home ( stieght shot of about 2 miles) hauled it at my norm 65 to 75 and the check engine light began flashing. Before shutting it off and still running a bit rough I could hear the belt starting shred & this odd smell. Throttle bering had gone out which explains the belt, yes ? I had'm both changed. My car still running rough & that smell and check engine light is still flashing. Can u tell me what the heck is going on?  P.S. It now has alittle over 200 thousand

The reason the check engine light is flashing instead of on steady is because it is missing bad and the car companies did this to tell you to stop the car as soon as possible to prevent damage. That is the only time the light will flash off and on instead of being on steady.
The cause is a little harder to diagnose. It could be a fouled spark plug, a bad plug wire, an injector, stopped up fuel filter. I can't remember if that car has the distributer or the coil packs but you could have a problem there. If you have never changed the spark plugs or fuel filter, it is well over a hundred thousand miles to do so now. They say to change them at one hundred thousand but 50 to 75 thousand is better and you will get better mileage. The fuel filter needs to be changed every 20 thousand miles now days because of all the cheap gas we have to put in the cars.
This is for mechanics or technicians. If no one out there believes me about the mileage on the fuel filter, then take the filter off and see what comes out the back. Looks like black water to me.

Posting the specific codes that the auto store pulled for you would help a lot. the codes will start with the letter "P" and be followed by four numbers, example P0304.

I'm guessing one of the codes was P0128. This would be an engine temp below closed loop operation. This is almost always fixed by replacing the thermostat. If you live in a "winter" area you will start to notice that the heater is not putting out enough heat when it gets cold. This can also increase fuel consumption as you need more fuel to run a colder engine.

As far as the running rough and "timing" issue (I assume you have the 4.2 liter straight 6) I'm going to bet that they are related. Cam actuator solenoids are fairly common on these. The trouble codes would help to reinforce this.

The big autoparts stores like Autozone will test your car for free with their scanners. The clerk should be able to tell you some of the possible problems. Get a problem Code from them.

Sometimes the results point to a single part or several parts needing further troubleshooting.

Change spark plugs 2001 dohc engine

it's not real difficult but you will need to move the plenum out of the way to get to the back plugs.. Might not be a bad idea to replace the plenum gasket but in my experience it can be reused if in good shape. The only thing I found is to make sure you get the vacuum hose on the underside of the plenum hooked up. You can't see it after the plenum is bolted down and it caused me a couple hours of frustration trying to figure out why it was running rough. As long as you are somewhat mechanicly inclined you won't have a problem.

99 olds silhouette check engine light blinks.Engine is running rough and the smell of unburnt gas is coming from the exhaust. Also noticed a burning smell coming from between the engine and firewall.

the cat converter is overheating because the engine is misfiring, get it to a repair shop ASAP, I would tow it, but converter damage has already been done.

99 Ford Taurus service engine light flashing

That sounds like a good start. Especially if they are old plugs and wires. But the best to do is go to your local auto parts store and see if they will plug it into an obdII code reader to see if the car shows any codes.

You can always just try plugs and wires first if you want.

My taurus has the jerks, and sputters?

The 1st thing you need to do is go to an Auto zone or Kragen auto and have them run a trouble code test, the OD light is blinking to let you know there is a transmission related fault, but it sounds like the may be other issues like the MAF sensor and passably a low fuel pressure concern.

I would recommend, at this point, to take the vehicle to someone who could do what we call an "Induction Cleaning". Dodge engines are noted for deposits forming on the sealing faces of the valves, resulting in poor cumbustion. A compression test might also reveal this. Also, some real good fuel injection cleaner in the fuel tank would also be advised.
