Question about 1988 Mazda B2200

.005 clearance between crankshaft and timing belt sprocket.

1993 Mazda B2200 2.2L Carb. the size of the crank is .985 outside OD & the timing belt sprocket is .990 inside. It is a remanufactured crank. they say the crank is OK. I think the crank is wrong. Too much clearance when you put 3 belts on the end of it to drive the AC, Power steering, and ALT. IN OVER 35 YEARS NEVER HAD A BALANCER THAT YOU COULD SLIDE OFF WITH YOUR FINGERS. can you tell me which is right the crank or the sprocket?

    Thank You for your responce. I am still not sure in my mind that it is right. Still too much old school in this 70 year old body to think that they would leave that much slop in that part of the engine. Thank You for your time Jerry

Mazdas specs for the crank are .985 but alot of cranks are made with a tolerence of .005 so from the factory alot of cranks are .005 to big are alittle smaller but both are right alittle play wont hurt it

Why are you removing this sprocket?
Or, do you mean crankshaft pulley?
If you are looking to removing the timing sprocket be aware that you will need to put the engine at its required timing setting points, YOU MUST USE THE CORRECT TIMING TOOLS and when tnese are fitted remove belt, remove crankshaft sprocket.
Fitting is reverse but there will be a resetting figure for the timing belt.
********Please dont do this job if you either have never dont this job before, do not have the correct tools, or just dont have the experience. Dont let a "friend do it or help you unless they are qualified Technicians.
You will destroy the engine in a few seconds of cranking if you get this wrong!! Be warned.

Setting timing marks


Mr. RAGSDALE.
I do not know if you did strip the belt yet or not. If you did not,I will advise you a just easy and good way to do it yourself. String for the stripping,you just remove the outside belts and pulleys,remove the plastic covers of the timing belt. Just put on the crankshaft the pulley bolt and slowly slowly turn the engine until you see all the marks aligned. On the Camshafts the two sprockets do have the letters "E" and "I", E= Exhaust and I= Inlet.means that the inner to dashboard side is the inlet cam and to the vehicle front the exhaust cam. These two cams with the letters must be aligned,with the crankshaft sprocket
having on the side a small groove which mus be aligned with a small point ball behind the sprocket on the cylinder block. There are your marks. Loose the tensioner and remove the belt.

you have to replace front crankshaft seal meaning you have to remove crankshaft pulley.you have to remove timing belt and remove timing belt sprocket and key.

How to position the timing belt crank shafts of 1997 mazda mpv


Raise and support the vehicle on jack stands. Remove the wheel on the passenger side of the vehicle using the drive ratchet and a socket. Remove the passenger side splash shield, using the drive ratchet and a 10mm socket. 2 Remove the accessory belt(s), using a wrench to loosen the tension. Unscrew the bolt from the crankshaft pulley, using the drive ratchet and a socket. Slide the crankshaft pulley and the timing belt guide washer directly behind it off the crankshaft.3 Remove all the 10mm bolts in the top and bottom timing belt covers. Remove the covers. The drive ratchet and a 10mm socket works well for this. 4 Push the crankshaft pulley on the crankshaft just enough to engage the keyway. Turn the crankshaft pulley clockwise until the timing mark on the top camshaft sprocket, which is marked with a line on the sprocket with a number 1 next to it, is lined up with the pointer straight up on top of the cover to the rear of the sprocket. Once the top mark is lined up, the crankshaft pulley's semi-circle mark should be lined up with the triangular pointer on the block. The marks on the crankshaft pulley should be straight up and the keyway should also be straight up. Remove the crankshaft pulley. 5 Loosen the tensioner bolt with a wrench, pull the tensioner to the left, away from the belt and loosely tighten the bolt to hold it in place. Remove the timing belt. 6 Install the timing belt counter-clockwise starting at the crankshaft pulley and move upward over the outside the water pump, on the inside the guide pulley and over the top of the camshaft, ending on the inside the tensioner. The main thing when installing a timing belt is to ensure the belt is as tight as possible opposite the tensioner. Get the belt tight between the crank sprocket and the cam sprocket so the tensioner can take out all the slack without moving the timing marks.7 Loosen the tensioner bolt and allow the tensioner to apply pressure to the belt. Use your hand to apply a slight pressure to the tensioner toward the belt and tighten the tensioner bolt. Check the belt tension to ensure it is not too tight or too loose. Check the timing marks again to ensure they still align. If the timing marks are not lined up, loosen the tensioner, move it back and repeat the last procedure over again until the belt is tensioned properly with no misalignment of the timing marks. 8 Install the crankshaft pulley temporarily and turn the pulley two complete revolutions, once again aligning the mark on the crankshaft pulley. Ensure the timing mark is still lined up perfectly on the camshaft sprocket. Reinstall the remaining parts in reverse order of removal

Installation
1.Install No. 2 idler pulley (if removed). Install and tighten bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Ensure idler pulley is clean and rotates smoothly. 2.Install No. 1 idler pulley and tension spring (if removed). Pry No. 1 idler pulley away from timing belt area as far as possible. Temporarily tighten No. 1 idler pulley bolt. Ensure idler pulley is clean and rotates smoothly. 3.Using crankshaft pulley bolt, rotate crankshaft so timing mark on crankshaft sprocket aligns with timing mark on oil pump housing. See. This will position keyway in crankshaft sprocket at 12 o'clock position.

CAUTION:If reusing timing belt, ensure reference marks on timing belt align with reference marks placed on crankshaft and camshaft sprockets. Ensure timing belt is installed in original direction of rotation.
4.Ensure all sprockets and idler pulleys are clean. Install timing belt on crankshaft sprocket, oil pump sprocket, No. 1 idler pulley, and then No. 2 idler pulley in sequence. 5.Install timing belt guide with cupped side away from crankshaft sprocket and flat side toward timing belt. Install No. 1 timing belt cover and new gasket. 6.Align crankshaft pulley key groove with key in crankshaft. Install crankshaft pulley. Install and tighten crankshaft pulley bolt to specification. 7.Rotate crankshaft clockwise so cylinder No. 1 is at TDC on compression stroke. Ensure timing mark on crankshaft pulley aligns with "0" mark on No. 1 timing belt cover. If reusing timing belt, ensure reference mark on timing belt aligns with upper edge of No. 1 timing belt cover. 8.Rotate camshaft, and align hole in camshaft sprocket with alignment mark on camshaft bearing cap. See Fig. 2 . Install timing belt on camshaft sprocket. If reusing timing belt, ensure reference mark on timing belt aligns with the reference mark on camshaft sprocket. Ensure tension exists on timing belt between the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets.
CAUTION:DO NOT rotate crankshaft counterclockwise, as viewed from timing belt end of engine.
9.Loosen No. 1 idler pulley bolt 1/2 turn. Rotate crankshaft pulley 2 full revolutions clockwise from TDC to TDC. 10.Ensure timing mark on crankshaft pulley aligns with "0" mark on No. 1 timing belt cover, and hole in camshaft sprocket aligns with alignment mark on camshaft bearing cap. See Fig. 2 . If timing marks are not aligned, remove timing belt and reinstall. 11.Rotate crankshaft clockwise 1 and 7/8 revolutions and align crankshaft pulley "0" mark with 45-degree Before Top Dead Center (BTDC) mark on No. 1 timing belt cover. See Fig. 5 . 12.Tighten No. 1 idler pulley bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install No. 2 timing belt cover and gaskets. Install and tighten spark plugs to specification. 13.To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. Install all bolts/nuts on right (timing belt side) engine mount before tightening to specification. 14.On Camry, when installing control rod and bracket on strut tower and right (timing belt side engine mount, tighten bolts to specification in sequence.

Hi, I am looking for a timing belt diagram for a 1998 2.5ltr Subaru Outback or can you tell me which timing marks on the sprockets line up to the encasing.


Timing Belt Cover, Belt & Sprockets Removal & Installation 2.5L Engine To Remove:
  1. Remove the drive belts.
  2. Remove the A/C compressor drive belt tensioner. Timing belt & cover DOHC exploded view subaru-03-25-6470.gif

  3. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  4. Remove the mounting bolts and left timing belt cover.
  5. Remove the mounting bolts and right timing belt cover.
  6. Remove the mounting bolts and front timing belt cover.
  7. Vehicles W/ M/T: Remove the timing belt guide.
  8. Ensure that the timing belt rotation arrows are still visible. If the marks are worn off, place new rotation marks on the belt. Timing belt alignment marks DOHC subaru-03-25-6472.gif

  9. Turn the crankshaft using a breaker bar and special adapter socket on the crankshaft. Align the timing mark on the crankshaft sprocket (1), left intake sprocket (2), left exhaust sprocket (3), right intake sprocket (4) and right exhaust sprocket (5) with the notches in cylinder block and timing belt cover.
  10. Paint alignment marks on the timing belt at the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets timing marks. CAUTION
    Do not turn the camshaft sprockets with the timing belt removed. The valves heads will contact each other causing the valve stems to bend.
  11. Remove the lower right idler pulley.
  12. Remove the timing belt.
  13. Remove the upper right idler pulley.
  14. Remove the lower left (toothed) idler pulley.
  15. Remove the belt tensioner.
  16. Hold the sprocket and remove the left intake and exhaust camshafts.
  17. Hold the sprocket and remove the right intake and exhaust camshafts.
  18. Remove the crankshaft sprocket.
To Install:
  1. Install the crankshaft sprocket.
  2. Hold the sprocket and install the right intake and exhaust camshafts with the mounting bolts. Tighten 58 ft-lb (78 Nm).
  3. Hold the sprocket and install the left intake and exhaust camshafts with the mounting bolts. Tighten 58 ft-lb (78 Nm).
  4. Reset the automatic belt tensioner as follows:
    • Remove the mounting bolt and belt tensioner. NOTE: Do not exceed more than 2,205 lb. (9,807 N).
    • Place the belt tensioner on a press. Press the adjuster rod down gradually (using more than 3 minutes) 66- lb (165 N) or more until the adjuster rod is aligned with the stop pin hole in the cylinder.
    • Insert a 0.08 in (2 mm) diameter pin or hex wrench into the pin hole to lock the adjuster rod.
    • Install the automatic belt tension adjuster with the mounting bolt. Tighten 18 ft-lb (25 Nm).
  5. Install the lower left (toothed) idler pulley. Tighten 29 ft-lb (39 Nm).
  6. Install the upper right idler pulley with the mounting bolt. Tighten 29 ft-lb (39 Nm). Crankshaft sprocket and oil pump cover alignment marks 2.5L DOHC subaru-03-25-4890.gif

  7. Align the timing mark on the crankshaft sprocket with the mark on the oil pump cover. Timing belt alignment marks DOHC subaru-03-25-6472.gif

  8. Align the single timing mark on the right exhaust camshaft sprocket with the notch on the timing belt cover.
  9. When the single timing mark on the right exhaust camshaft sprocket is aligned with the notch on the timing belt cover, ensure that the double lines on the intake camshaft and exhaust camshaft sprockets are aligned.
  10. Align the single timing mark on the left exhaust camshaft sprocket with the notch on the timing belt cover by turning the sprocket counter clockwise (viewed from front of engine).
  11. Ensure that the double lines on the intake camshaft and exhaust camshaft sprockets are aligned when the single timing mark on the left exhaust camshaft sprocket is aligned with the notch on the timing belt cover. CAUTION
    • The camshafts can be rotated independently causing the valves heads to contact each other resulting in bent valve stems.
    • When the timing belt is removed the camshafts will turn to the lowest cam lobe position by the force of the valve springs. Before installing the timing belt the 4 camshafts are in the lowest lift position (valves closed).
    • When the camshafts are rotated to install the timing belts, # 2 intake and # 4 exhaust cam lobes of the left camshafts are held to push their corresponding valves down. In this position, these valves are held in the open position. Right camshafts are held so their cam lobes do not push the valves down.
    • The left camshafts must be rotated from the lowest lobe position to the position where the timing belt can be installed at the smallest possible angle in order to prevent intake and exhaust valve contact. Camshaft sprockets rotation subaru-03-25-6473.gif

    • Do not turn the camshafts in the direction shown in the illustration because the valves will open at the same time and contact each other.
    CAUTION
    If the timing belt alignment is off the mark buy more than 3 teeth, the valves and pistons may have contact.

  12. Align the timing marks on the belt with the marks on the sprockets in the numerical order shown in the illustration.
  13. Install the lower right idler pulley with the mounting bolt. Tighten 29 ft-lb (39 Nm).
  14. Ensure that the timing mark alignment is correct and remove the tensioner stop pin.
  15. Vehicles W/ M/T: Install the timing belt guide and temporarily tighten the mounting bolts.
  16. Vehicles W/ M/T: Measure the clearance between the guide and timing belt. The clearance should measure 0.039 ± 0.020 in (1.0 ± 0.5 mm).
  17. Vehicles W/ M/T: Tighten the guide bolts 7.2 ft-lb (9.8 Nm).
  18. Install and secure the front timing belt cover with the mounting bolts.
  19. Install and secure the right timing belt cover with the mounting bolts.
  20. Install and secure the left timing belt cover with the mounting bolts.
  21. Install the crankshaft pulley.
  22. Install the A/C compressor drive belt tensioner.
  23. Install the drive belts.

Timing belt markings mazda B2500 1998


Timing Belt, Sprockets & Front Cover Removal & Installation Timing belt To Remove:
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the exhaust side spark plugs, outer timing belt cover, and crankshaft pulley.
  3. Turn the crankshaft until the number one piston is at top dead center (TDC). CAUTION
    The camshaft belt tensioner tool (303-097) can be damaged when trying to relieve belt tension if you attempt to remove the belt without first loosening both the timing belt tensioner adjusting bolt and the spring pivot bolt.
  4. Loosen the timing belt spring pivot bolt, but do not remove it at this point in the procedure.
  5. Loosen the adjusting bolt slowly and release the spring tension.
  6. Turn the tensioner with the camshaft belt tensioner tool (303-097), against the spring pressure, clockwise to the farthest position.
  7. While holding it in this position, tighten the adjusting bolt to hold the tensioner away from the belt.
  8. Remove the timing belt.
To Install:
  1. Be certain that on piston number one, the crankshaft is at TDC with the crankshaft keyway pointing straight up and the circle on the crankshaft sprocket lined up with the notch on the engine front cover.
  2. Line up the timing marks.
  3. Install the timing belt over the crankshaft sprocket going counterclockwise over the oil pump sprocket and over the camshaft sprocket.
  4. Loosen the bolt allowing the tensioner pulley to press against the timing belt. NOTE: The timing belt tensioner should not be tightened or the belt tension will not be evenly distributed over the whole belt.
  5. Turn the crankshaft two revolutions clockwise. Next, slowly bring the crank to the number one position firing position with the keyway on the crank facing up. The dot on the crankshaft gear is lined up with the notch on the front cover.
  6. Check the timing mark alignment again. If necessary, repeat the procedure.
  7. Tighten the bolts. Torque the pivot bolt to 30-40 ft-lb (40-55 Nm). Torque the adjustment/locking bolt to 26-33 ft-lb (35-45 Nm).
  8. Install the crankshaft pulley and tighten the bolt. Torque to 93-121 ft-lb (125-165 Nm).
  9. Install the outer timing belt cover and tighten the bolt. Torque to 70-106 in-lb (8-12 Nm).
  10. Install the exhaust side spark plugs.
Sprockets To Remove:
  1. Remove the timing belt.
  2. Install the camshaft sprocket holding/removing tool (303-098) onto the sprocket.
  3. Remove the camshaft sprocket.
To Install:
  1. Place the key and camshaft sprocket on the shaft.
  2. Install the camshaft sprocket holding/removing tool (303-098) onto the camshaft sprocket and tighten the bolt. Torque to 52-70 ft-lb (70-95 Nm).
  3. Remove the tool then install the timing belt.
Outer Cover To Remove:
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Remove the fan shroud.
  4. Loosen the bolts on the water pump pulley, but do not remove them at this point in the procedure.
  5. Remove the drive belt, the water pump pulley, and the fan and clutch assembly.
  6. Recover the refrigerant from the A/C system.
  7. Disconnect the A/C wiring connector.
  8. Remove the A/C compressor from the mounting bracket then remove the A/C mounting bracket with the power steering pump still attached.
  9. Remove the outer timing belt cover.
To Install:
  1. Install the outer timing belt cover. Torque to 70-106 in-lb (8-12 Nm).
  2. Install the A/C mounting bracket with the power steering pump still attached. Torque the M10 bolts and stud to 35 ft-lb (48 Nm) and torque the M8 bolt to 18 ft-lb (25 Nm).
  3. Install the A/C compressor to the mounting bracket. Torque to 16-20 ft-lb (21-28 Nm).
  4. Connect the A/C wiring connector.
  5. Refill the refrigerant into the A/C system.
  6. Install the fan and clutch assembly, the water pump pulley, and the drive belt.
  7. Tighten the bolts on the water pump pulley. Torque to 13-17 ft-lb (17-23 Nm).
  8. Install the fan shroud. Torque to 54-70 in-lb (6-8 Nm).
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10. Start the engine. Check for leaks and repair as necessary.
Inner Cover To Remove:
  1. Loosen oil pump sprocket bolt.
  2. Remove timing belt, timing belt tensioner, oil pump sprocket, and crankshaft pulley.
  3. Remove inner timing belt cover.
To Install:
  1. Install inner timing belt cover.
  2. Install crankshaft pulley. Torque to 93-121 ft-lb (125-165 Nm).
  3. Install the oil pump sprocket.
  4. Install the timing belt tensioner. Torque the pivot bolt to 30-40 ft-lb (40-55 Nm). Torque the adjustment/locking bolt to 26-33 ft-lb (35-45 Nm).
  5. Install the timing belt.
  6. Tighten the oil pump sprocket bolt. Torque to 30-40 ft-lb (40-55 Nm).
  7. Torque the camshaft bolt to 52-70 ft-lb (70-95 Nm).

Timing marks on the 3L motor are: (looking from the front of the engine) right side camshaft sprocket (1 dot on sprocket and the cylinder head); left side camshaft sprocket (1 dot on sprocket and clyinder head); crankshaft sprocket (arrow on the block and an inverted arrow on the face of the sprocket) and of course the timing belt cover

What size is the woodruff key


With dial calipers, my closest estimate for the key size on a b2200 1987 to 199? is 3/4 inch in length, and width 190, height 240 to 250, I find that 230 is not tall enough, you may even want to check to be sure you have clearance behind the sprocket, as the shoulder on the crank and the spocket both wear down, Jack near Yelm is the brain on this.

Installation

Temporarily tighten No. 1 idler pulley bolt. Ensure idler pulley is clean and rotates smoothly. 3.Using crankshaft pulley bolt, rotate crankshaft so timing mark on crankshaft sprocket aligns with timing mark on oil pump housing. See.
