Question about 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix

Steering problem I am hearing a knocking noise on the right front side while driving and my steering starts shaking past 50 mpr. Is it my steering rod or v-joint that is making the knocking sound and causing the steering to shake?

When turning you hear the sound? yes it may be a tie rod, cv shaft and or alignment issue. and as for the shaking... check your tire balance.

What is a CV joint?


A wobble in the steering is more likely to be one of

- loose wheel nuts
- loose hub nut
- worn steering tie rod outer joint
- worn steering tie rod inner joint
- loose steering rod universal
- worn steering knuckle ball joint

Out of these a worn or loose steering tie rod joint is most likely. If you can, jack the front of the car up and rest it on axle stands, NOT just on the jack, then have one person shake the front wheel back and forth while holding it at 9 and 3 o'clock, while another holds the steering wheel still. Then look at and feel each joint to see if you can locate the looseness.

When i turn tha steering wheel on my 2002 dodge grand caravan i hear a slight knocking noise, i don't know if it coming from the tire or steering wheel


CHECK UR CV JOINT AND BOTH AXLES ALSO CHECK BOTH BEARINGS ON ROTORS AND TIE ROD ENDS AND BALL JOINTS,IF U HAVE SOME ONE TURN STEERING FOR YOU AND YOU LOOK UNDER NEATH YOU'LL HEAR AND SEE WHICH IS MAKING NOISE,dont forget after work is done on front end (GET) front end alignment VIP and must be done!!!!

Steering wheel and front end shakes with knocking noise


easiest check struts for leakage or if the top nut came loose.
next Ball joints support bottom of lower control arm and try to move tire in and out on the bottom.
next check bearing plate for movement by trying to move top of tire.
last check tie rod ends by moving as in right turn left turn.
do both sides. if one side is bad replace both sides so you don't have to tie up vehicle in a couple months.

It sounds like a ball joint is worn, possibly the rack end ball joint or tie rod end.
With the bumpy ride it could also be that the front shock absorber has failed.
Jack the front wheel up on each side in turn, grab the wheel at each side and shake it back and forth as hard as you can. If you hear or feel looseness, the problem is in the steering, as above.
Then shake the wheel while holding it at top and bottom. If you feel looseness then, the problem is in the front suspension wishbones.
Repeat this on the other front wheel. Let it down on the ground, then bounce each front corner up and down as hard as you can (you might have to have a second person with you doing this). If you hear a clunk or feel excessive bounciness, it is the shock absorber. When bouncing like this, the car should resist, and not keep bouncing when you let go.

Steering was loose while driving and turning, then suddenly would **** to the right


It sounds like you have at least one bad tie rod end....this is the most likely problem, but I have listed other things to check out.

To figure out which tie rod end(s) are bad, you need to jack the front end up and put it on jackstands, or if you have a buddy that works at a shop that can put it on a lift, that is even better.

With the front end jacked up and the steering unlocked, have somebody turn the wheel left and right and watch as the tie rods (the rods that actually "steer" the wheels) move - there should be no "play" or looseness in either the inner or outer tie rod ends.... the large turnbuckle looking ends on the rods. Most often, it is the outer tie rod ends that go bad, and if it is pulling right on you the one on the right side is most suspect. Also try and hold one wheel at a time still while your buddy steers and see if there is any slop.... there should be ZERO play or slop between the steering wheel and the front wheels.

Bad ball joints can also cause steering problems. With the front still jacked up, grab a wheel and try and shake it up and down, in and out. If you feel it move, replace both the upper and lower balljoints on that wheel (only one set may be bad, but if so, the other is certainly worn!).

Bad wheel bearings can also cause steering problems, and allot of shaking and vibration when you are driving. If you can shake your jacked up wheel any which way and it is loose, or if you spin the wheel and hear allot of crunching noises, you have bad wheel bearings.

All of these problems are serious, and if you have a sudden complete failure of the bad part while you are driving, you can lose control of your truck. You need to determine which of the above is causing your problem and take care of it immediately. The best answer is to go to a qualified mechanic, but if you are up to doing it yourself, be careful and don't try and do it all alone.

While driving I make a turn around 45 mph and the cars front right side starts to shake. Also, when Im driving 60 mph on the highaway it starts to shake every 5-7 seconds. What can be the problem?


almost certainly a wheel bearing that is just about to break up.could also be track rod end if you have any play in steering.you need to jack up the car(wheel off the ground)and with your hands at 9-3 oclock, rock from side to side,any "play"will be OBVIOUS. enlist the "eye" or "hands" of a volunteer to help,makes it easier.

Steering shacks replaced steering damper still shacks


shakes?or shacks?Let's just say that you mean shake.If your brake pedal pulsates,replace the rotors.If your steering wheel shakes(low speed)broken belt in front tire.Jack up one tire enough to clear the ground,spin it.Spins nice,lower and jack up the other.Spin that one,if the belt is broke it'll be very noticable.While up in the air check the lug nuts,if they're loose it can make the steering shake too.If the shake is at highway speed,bad shocks or tie rods or ball joints or a combination of these.Jack up a front tire and try to move it(Key turned off to lock steering).If it moves top to bottom,ball joint.Side to side,tie rod.Doesn't move,shocks.The worst could be a bad hub bearing,but you'd hear it and you said nothing about any noise.

I feel a slight thud in the steering and hear a light thud when I turn a corner; seems to happen most when the car has just started driving; is this an issue of power steering fluids, something in the rack...


This is most likely the steering knuckle or tie rod end that needs grease or most likley replacement. If your hear clunk when turning, then it is proabably the tie rod ends. If clunks while driving, then it may be the balljoints.

Vehicle hakes when driving 45 to 50 miles per hour


Check wheel balance,
check steering linkages for loosness - such as tie rod ends, steering rack linkages etc,
check driveline for worn/loose joints and bearings.

When the van is driven my front end is making a knocking noise my front driver side wheel shakes and the steering wheel shakes


Front wheel drive cars have CV joints in the axles to permit the wheel to turn for steering. The CV joint is basically a universal joint on steroids. When they ware out it can cause this type of condition.
