With that much already invested, why give up now? How about the crank position sensor-was that replaced as well? For spark control and spark timing, the computer needs inputs from both the cam position sensor and the crank position sensor before it can know when to cut power to the coils for spark to occur.
Before proceeding any further, you should check for diagnostic trouble codes. You would need an OBD 1 type code reader or scanner for your olds. Any stored codes may help you find the problem.
You can test the ignition system by checking for spark on a spark plug wire when the engine is cranking over. Pull the plug wire off a spark plug and put in a clean spark plug into the wire. Lay the plug so the threads are touching metal on the engine somewhere. Have someone crank the engine over and watch for a spark from the spark plug. If you have a blue, snapping spark when cranking, ignition is good.
One last note: since it dies when driving, there is a possibility that you have a malfunction in the pcm-the computer.

I have a 1988 f150 with a 302. On the way to work this morning it just died. Didn't sputter or pop, it just turned off. Pulled it off the road and it wouldn't restart. Not sure what it could be it's never...


First check battery voltage should 12-12.6 then check for spark at the plug by pulling sparkplug and hook plug back up and have someone crank the engine over.If you have spark then check your fuel pressure it should be 35-45 psi with key on engine off.lLet me know what you find.HOPE THIS HELPS!!!

Car will not start have put new wires plugs on it and coil pack and moduels on it could you tell what eles it could be


check to see if u are getting gas? no gas = fuel pump

have gas to motor?= crank or cam position sensor

Cranks but does not fire. put gas into intake still no start.


First off check and verify you have sufficient fuel pressure with a fuel gauge if the fuel pressure is good next verify you have spark remove one of the sparkplugs and instert a spark tester into the sparkplug wire and crank the engine around and observe that there is spark, if theres spark remove all spark plugs and perform a compression test the compression should be no lower then 180 PSI for that engine, next if theres no spark unplug the 4 wire connector from the coil pack and with an ohm meter ohm across the purple and yellow wire the resistance of the crankshaft position sensor should be between 700 and 900 OHMs if its not replace the crankshaft posistion sensor its located behind the engine in back of the starter, if you dont have fuel pressure check the fuel pump relay and fuse, if they both are okay then the pump is probably bad and you will have to drop the gas tank to access the pump.

I am not getting any spark to the spark plugs to get engine to turn over, start, or run. I already replaced the plugs and everything to do with them, the fuel filter, the air filter, and the relay switch....


ignition moduel inside the distrubitor. around a $40 part. Two screws on distrubitor, two more on the moduel, and one wire connector and you're done.

305 vortec engine and has no fire need to know where to start, how to check crank sensor, or what else i need to check


if it died all of a sudden no warning, replace the ingition moduel located in the distrubitor. These are common to go out without warning and would cause no spark. It's like a $30 part and just simple tools needed to replace. If it went out over time let me know and I'll tell you what else to check.

I am trying to start my engine on my 1985 4runner it turns over but doesnt catch on.. what should I do..


'85's mostly had 4 cylinder engines, 22R, 22RE and 22REI. Remove a sparkplug wire and stick a sparkplug into the end. Hold the sparkplug, preferably with a well insulated glove, against a good metal part (exhaust manifiold will do, no paint or rust) nearby being carefull to stay clear of the fan. Now have someone turn the key and when the engine turns, see if a spark is jumping across the sparkplug your are holding...snap,...snap..snap....is what you should see and hear. If not, your ignition is not creating spark. Remove the center wire of the distributor and try to put the sparkplug on the end of that wire and repeat the previous test. If you get spark that means the distributor cap is not transferring the spark thru it to the wires that go down to your sparkplugs. Remove and replace the distributor cap and the rotor inside paying special attention to mark the wires and where they plug into the cap. The rotor only goes on one way, same with the cap. If you dont get spark coming to the center wire of the distributoe cap your ignitin module may be bad, a good time to have a shop run a test on it. Before heading to the shop, be sure to check your fuses. Maybe you should do that first as it is the simplest. If you have spark at the sparkplug and still no starting, a small amount of gasoline poured into the intake ( please dont pour a cup of gas into it! Just a spoonfull or so). With the sparkplug wires inplace, crank the motor. If it kicks and then goes back to cranking with no results, your fuel isnt getting to the intake. Could be a fuel pump (common) or a plugged fuel filter. The filter is easy, replace it. To test for fuel pressure you will need to locate the fuel line coming to the intake, carburated or injected, the inlet can be loosened and have someone turn the key on and you should see some fuel leaking around the fitting you only loosened. DO NO REMOVE IT-JUST LOOSEN. If you have fuel pressure your problem needs a mechanic. If no fuel pressure it's time to check the fuel pump thru the access panel under the backseat. BE SURE TO TIGHTEN THE INLET FUEL FITTING AT THIS POINT. Good luck.
REMEMBER- GASOLINE IS VERY DANGEROUS. DO NOT PERFORM THESE DIAGNOSTICS UNLESS YOU FEEL TRAINED ENOUGH TO DO SO AND ALWAYS WITH AN EXTINGUISHER ON HAND.
