Volvo S70 won't start - battery, generator, or other

A few weeks ago my car (2000 Volvo S70) wouldn't start. When I turned the key, the dash board lights came on, it started clicking, but it wouldn't turn over. Up till then, I had no indications of a weak battery. I had it jumped, and it ran/started successfully for a few weeks.

I drove it last night without any problems, but today, again, it wouldn't start. How do I know if it's a battery problem or a bad generator or something else?

The battery is 3-4 years old, and the car has ~90K miles. I attached a voltmeter to the battery after the first jumpstart, and it read 11.99. I didn't check this time.

    Dear autodr,

Great, thanks! After a jumpstart, I will take it to buy a new battery tomorrow. BTW, I got 11.99 volts when the car was off.

Usually multiple clicking (like a machine gun) does indicate lw battery voltage. did you get 11.9 volts with it running or car off? with running you should be over 13.6 min up to 14.0 volts. these cars have a fair amount of electronics with some residual voltage draws which may shorten battery life. 4 yrs is not too bad. i would consider replacing battery

I have a 2000 Volvo S70 and I am having the SAME problem. I have taken it to multiple mechanics and no one knows what the problem is. The battery checks out fine, there are no electrical draws on the battery, the alternator is fine, etc, etc. And yet, when I try to start it it won't start. I have to rely on getting jumped everytime I go anywhere. It is infuriating. Please please please someone come up with the answer.

Turn off the car and turn it back on, then check for any alarm buttons. Press those a few times, and try it. Also try to manually unlock the doors with the key.

AC dosnt work

This is unfortunately a very expensive and laborious fix. The Evaporator behind the dash board is leaking on you, and you have to remove the entire dash and instrument panel to get to it.

This is a job best left to someone who has worked on your year, make, and model.

I would generally start at the dealership, and they may recommend someone who works on the 2000 Volvo S70 who works locally to that dealership but independently.

Hope this helps.

2000 volvo s70 difficult to start, more so as fuel level drops. Cranks fine. Recently changed MAF sensor, B+ cable, plugs, fuel filter - no improvement.

Sounds like the fuel pump, as the levels of the fuel tank drop, there's less natural pressure on the fuel, which would definitely make it harder to start with a weak fuel stream from a bad pump.

Engine starting problem

Hey Lindypop,

If you have another ignition key, I would suggest trying that key and see if the problem persists. The key has a micro-chip in them that allows the key to work in your vehicle only, and you may be having a problem with one of your keys.

If this is the case, a fault will be stored in the engine computer. It will be a good idea to check those codes and address them as necessary, it may help to avoid getting stranded.

Good Luck!
