Question about 1997 Chevrolet Astro

1996 HONDA ACCORD CRANKSHAFT SENSOR AND CAMSHAFT SENSOR.

My 1996 Honda accord threw a code for crank shaft sensor last year i refused to fix it, now it throws a code for camshaft sensor and my carmd suggests that I replace the distributor. Will that cover the crankshaft sensor too. And where is both the crankshaft and the camshaft sensor? I want to replace all this myself.

    On the highway it lost power. thick fuel smell. codes p0102 and p0341. replaced the camshaft sensor by replacing the Distributor. timing appears off. cant start the engine to confirm timing. timing belt was replaced over a year ago.

    Inspection station pulled the codes to read Camshaft position sensor problem and timing problem. I replaced the sensor and wondering if there is anything more I can do without taking it to a shop

Befor in the ealier models of accords they use to be both the cam and crank sensors in the distibutor but they separated them !!!So no they are not together on your car tha cam sensor is in the distributor and the crank sensor is in front of engine or in the lower timing belt cover if it is in the timing cover you can see a wire going dow the timing cover way to the bottom on the rear side off it

I seriously doubt it. Sometimes the crankshaft or camshaft sensor fails and the other is used by the ECU to get you by. Many vehicles do not do this. The ECU uses this for spark plug firing timing and is critical...

Where is the crankshaft positioning sensor on a 2000 Honda Accord VTEC 3.0 6 cylinder


My info shows the crank sensor takes its reading from the front end of crankshaft. You will have to remove crank shaft pulley and timing belt cover to get at it, according to my info.

It may be easier to get at front of crankshaft through passenger side wheel well?

What does this code mean


Does the truck run ok? If so may just be bad sensor .it reads the correlation between cam and crank shafts so timing is correct so the camshaft control the valves and crankshaft controlling the pistons don't hit each other

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

4.3L, 5.0L, 5.7L and 7.4L Engines
See Figures 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6

  1. Remove the timing cover. This will allow access to the timing chain.
  2. Crank the engine until the timing marks on both sprockets are nearest each other and in line between the shaft centers.

  1. On 1996-98 vehicles remove the crankshaft position sensor reluctor ring, if equipped. On 7.4L engines tool J-41371 or its equivalent puller must be used to remove the reluctor ring.
  2. Take out the bolts that hold the camshaft gear to the camshaft. This gear is a light press fit on the camshaft and will come off easily. It is located by a dowel. The chain comes off with the camshaft gear.

A gear puller will be required to remove the crankshaft gear.
To install:

  1. Without disturbing the position of the engine, mount the new crankshaft gear on the shaft, and mount the chain over the camshaft gear. Arrange the camshaft gear in such a way that the timing marks will line up between the shaft centers and the camshaft locating dowel will enter the dowel hole in the cam sprocket.
  2. Place the cam sprocket, with its chain mounted over it, in position on the front of the truck and pull up with the three bolts that hold it to the camshaft.
  3. After the gears are in place, turn the engine two full revolutions to make certain that the timing marks are in correct alignment between the shaft centers. Tighten the camshaft sprocket bolts (and nut on the 4.3L) to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm) on 1988-95 models. On 1996-98 models, tighten the bolts to 18 ft. Lbs. (25 Nm). On the 7.4L, tighten them to 20 ft. lbs. (26 Nm) on 1988-95 models. On 1996-98 models, tighten the bolts to 25 ft. Lbs. (34 Nm).

When installing the crankshaft position sensor you must use install a new oil ring seal onto the sensor.
  1. Install the crankshaft position sensor reluctor ring (if equipped), onto the crankshaft until it is firmly seated against the crankshaft sprocket. On 1996-98 7.4L vehicles replace the reluctor ring with a new component.
  2. Install the front cover, torsional damper, water pump and the radiator.

Use an scanner to read any ECU trouble codes.

Adjustable Camshaft timing solenoid


In this case the solenoid needs to be replaced.The error code in this case is P1533.This code is many a times noticed on Mercedes Benz.

How to replace cam shaft sensor


Assuming you have the 2.3 L 4 cylinder engine, the CYP sensor [Honda does not call it a camshaft sensor] is located in the distributor. It also has 2 crankshaft sensors, located down at the front of the crankshaft. You need to remove the timing belt covers to access those.
FYI, P1259 is a VTEC system [variable valve timing] malfunction code. First step would be to change the engine oil and filter. Dirty oil can cause the VTEC solenoid to stick.

p1398= engine control system missfire detection limit reached probable causes, wiring,poor connections,engine mechanical fault,ignition/fuel system fault (causing misfire) or camshaft/ crank shaft position sensor

There are two cam shaft sensors and one crank sensor Nissian did sell a kit at one time with all the sensors in it one cam sensor is in the left cylinder head a one is in the right cylinder head
