For the sake of cheap expense could be worth renewing the engine management coolant temp sensor as could be faulty and not telling computer more fuel needed when cold or if have means of a multimeter being handy then check resistance between pins 1 and 3 and measure resistance readings should be approx at a temperature of 10.c between 3350 to 4400 ohms at 20.c between 2250 to 3000 ohms and at 30.c between 1500 to 2100 ohms. Also check resistance of intake air temp sensor between pins 1 and 2 and should read similar to the figures above at them temps too. Hope this helps.

VW golf GL 1998 never had any issues with it always started first go then i got in and it just would'nt fire plenty of spark and fuel we even tried to roll start it??????

Tell you mate that by running the tank dry he has just cost you a new fuel pump. The pump has a set of plastic gears that move the fuel and produce the pressure but when these gears are run with out fuel to cool and lubricate them they generally melt . The pump is not cheap so check out a VW wreckers for a good pump

I need to know where the fuel pump relay (J17) is for a 2004 mk5 vw golf

You very likely are going to replace the fuel pump, well i recomend you check the vw recalls on failing fuel pumps or related fuel lines and fasteners.
I own a 2004 vw golf and began to leak fuel at the fuel delibery nipples right out of the fuel pump. the problem is that either there tension on the nipple and cause to crak thus leak, or the fuel line is short and pulling toward the rear right tire causing it to crak and leak. the
Volkswagen Golf Recall 05V154000 is the solution
this recall is for a vw golf 1999-2000 but all the fuel pumps around vw 's 1999 up to 2006 have the same problem but you need to put acomplain with the NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S VEHICLE SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), OR GO TO HTTP://WWW.SAFERCAR.GOV.if your car is not under these recall. Fuse # 28 will stop the fuel pump so you can remove it

In the morning or when my 1987 vw golf sits for a while (when the car is cold) it will start right up but then dies. i have to rev it and keep the rpm's up for a couple of minutes and as it get's warm it...

There are devices in the Bosch CIS-E system not functioning that may need replaced. Most commonly it would be the thermo-time switch. This switch is also a sensor telling the ECU whether your engine is cold or hot so it would compensate fuel delivery depending on temperature. An auxiliary air regulator also opens (more air) or closes (less air) dependent from the thermo-time switch signals. It's basically telling the ECU when it's a cold morning to supply a richer air/fuel mixture or not to when it's at operating temperature. There is also a cold start valve (fifth fuel injector) that could be sticking or leaking or simply not supplying fuel during cold start up. Again, this has a higher level of understanding and special VW tools to diagnose your fuel injection problem that should be left to a VW tech to work on. It could be dangerous because fuel is involved, a single spark from static electricity could ruin your day.

Vw golf 1994 1598cc with monotronic injection, engine only starts from cold. won't restart once warm, anybody had the same problem? if so what is the cause?

sounds like a clogged fuel bar and may be in need of replacement ...every-time you turn the key from off to on the cold start injector fires the car.also may be a clogged fuel filter to bad fuel-pump but open the hood and visually inspect the vacuum lines for cracks and wear as well as the plug wires and other wires are not grounding out somewhere look for the obvious as well as all fluid levels

In cold temps-Starts good, then stalls out

Could be a problem with the thermo time switch, cold start injector or idle air stabilizer... Probably a job for a pro as this requires detailed testing to solve... Hope this helps...;-)
