Both appear to be a lean mixture problem according to my research. Have you run some injector cleaner through it by any chance? What about coolant level, is it staying up, pressure tested, just in case coolant is mixing with fuel via, head or intake gasket leak, and leaning out the mixture. Low fuel pressure will cause lean mixture in some cases, test it or at least change filter if not done recently, or both. Hope that helps.

Yeah so far you've done good, the only thing i would recommend is that your replace the mass airflow sensor instead of trying to clean it. once you've done that you would need to disconnect your battery to reset your cars computer to reset then the codes should be gone. better yet try disconnecting the battery first then see if that works if not replace the mass airflow sensor.

Check for engine vacuum leaks, use a can of carburetor spray and spray around the top of the engine, pay close attention to the intake manifold, if there is a leak the engine will speed up a little, also the MAF may be defective, cleaning it does not always fix the issue, which is the heated sensor wire no sending the correct signal. My ford truck failed the smog test because bank 1 and 2 are to lean ( p0171 & p0174 )

possible solutions are, a dirty maf sensor. remove manifold air flow sensor and clean it with maf sensor cleaner. you can buy a can at any auto parts store to clean, take off and clean maf sensor, do not touch inside of sensor it is very fragil. when cleaning sensor be sure it is dry before installing it back on vehicle. also check for a vacuum hose leak downstream of maf sensor.make sure air filter is clean. this usually takes care of the problem. po171 and po174 are the same. you can use electrical cleaner to clean sensor also. also check for a dirty fuel filter and fuel pressure, if needbe.

Getting a code po171 on a '98 ford expedition...O2 sensor? If so whitch one?

CODE PO171 -SYSTEM ADAPTIVE FUEL TOO LEAN. POSSIBLE CAUSE.AIR LEAKS AFTER THE MAF SENSOR OR LEAKS IN THE PVC SYSTEM. EXHAUST LEAKS BEFORE OR NEAR WHERE THE HO2S IS MOUNTED. FUEL INJECTORS RESTRICTED OR NOT SUPPLYING ENOUGH FUEL. FUEL PUMP WEAK. LEAKING EGR VALVE GASKET OR DIAPHRAGM.MAF SENSOR DIRTY CAUSES PCM TO UNDERESTIMATE AIR FLOW / NOW THE BANK 1 SENSOR ITS MOUNTED IN THE EXHAUST SYSTEM BEFORE THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER.THE BANK 2 SENSOR IS IN EXHAUST AFTER THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER.

Code po171 7 po174

your computer is reporting bank 1 and 2 too lean, usually caused by the mass air flow (MAF) sensor, you can usually clean this sensor and reset the light. Clean it with electric cleaner or brake cleaner, make sure it is dry before reinstalling, also take care not to damage it. Hope this helps, let me know

dont take soo much in consideration after you have make all this things, some time is on only for any wire faulty, or a shrt electrical arc in any place in wire system. ask auto tap mechsnics for this maybe they have similar case before.

I have 98 explorer im getting same codes ive worked on cars all my life I havent replaced anything but my fuel filter so far on the explorer and that wasnt it.I know people tell you to replace all that other stuff, but if you know cars and how the stuff works thats on a car then you can fix anything with out people telling you;you need to buy this and then this and there just fishing when the dont know there as* and whole in the ground.Im going to replace my lower and upper intake seals like he says above. At least theres one more smart one out there and not someone that thinks they know it all like people that work in the parts places and some dealers.

Check engine light codes, p0171, p0174. forde explorer 2003 sport

this fords have very comun problems with maf sensors geting contaminated, if you have not or can hear any vacium leaks, the problem is goin to be a conataminated mas air flow snsor (maf)
allow the engine to cold down for at least 15minutes and the remove the air filter hosing and inside has to have a sensor, clean the two liitle resistors inside with brake or carburetor cleaner, allow it to dry and reinstall it.
if this inf help please mark it as fixya ranking after you try what i said
