Car dies when driving, check engine light comes on.

2002 Kia optima LX 2.4L 5 spd.,timing belt, catalytic converter, plugs, plug wires, coils, egr valve all new. Car runs fine for awhile. Then dies, if you let it set awhile. Will run fine again for awhile. Check engine light comes on. Puzzled at what it could be. KIA told me it was the converter, but that is new.

I have had a professional working on it. KIA said it was the catalytic converter and egr valve. After these where replaced it ran fine for 200 miles. The car runs fine, then all of asudden it acts like it is loosing power, then dies. If you let it set for awhile. It will start right up and run fine. It might go 100 miles or 10 miles. The car has a 118,000 on it. The tune up and timing belt where normal maintenance. Hate to stick to much more in it, because it isn't worth alot. The dealer has gotten alot to work on this and hasn't fixed the problem.

Its not hot. Live in Iowa. But it seems to act up when it gets warmed up. It has a new gas cap. There is no pressure on the tank when it dies. I have tried this solution. Thanks

The problem is we are limited to the number of KIA dealers in our area. It seems that they are the only ones with the correct computer.

Thanks. This is the dealers print out. 116354 PO421 cat eff, PO426 evap vent malf diagnosed and found the codes PO421 cat eff and found cats are burned out, and graphed with GDS and found with watching 02 sensors upstream 02 was almost the same as downstrean, found PO421 evap vent malf. Thats why they replaced the cat. convert. I thought problem was fixed, because it ran fine for 200 miles. The stuck me a bundle to repair this. The auto isn't worth much more and of course their response is to bring it back in so they can soak me more.

There is a good chance it could be your fuel pump , however if the check engine light is coming on and the dealer cant tell you what is wrong , try a different dealer or another shop. Second opinions never hurt.

From what you have done already I would lean towards a computer issue perhaps , if the dealership cant pull a usefull code out of your computer it makes it even more likely this is the issue. However this is usually not a good idea to just start swapping parts on a whim. I would def get another dealer somewhere to look at it. Its sounding like your dealership isnt up to snuff on there diagnosis work.

My 1999 ford escort lx is jolting when accelerating and when idling it feels like it wants to die but doesnt

Water in gas, plugged fuel injector, plugged fuel filter, bad plugs or wires. Its tune-up time! Start with the easy stuff and go from there. Hopefully it's an easy fix.
Could also be plugged catalytic convertercatalytic converter or bad torque converter

How to fix lean in Zone 1?

Check for a vacuum leak. A lean condition is often caused by un-metered air entering the engine.

Ford explorer, 1999 engine running rough, some times shut down after 3-5 min of operation. Any suggestions?

This could be several things, If a shop did the repairs, I assume they also checked the fuel pressure regulator. Since you do not mention a Check Engine Light being on, I assume it is not. So that rules out the EGR valve. It is possible for the catalytic converter to be totally clogged, and cause the engine to run rough and die. Other possibilities are the coil, or arching in the plug wires. Vacuum leaks will cause rough idle sometimes.
I would suggest, if the check engine light is not on, start the engine, and observe it at night to see if you have plug wire leakage, if so, replace, If not, disconnect the catalytic converter(s) and see if the engine smooths out if so, replace. There are a lot of other things that can cause this type of issue, and a bit more history would be helpful. Did the problem just start? Did it get worse over time? Is the CEL on?

2004 Ford Focus LX, was sputtering while driving

A flashing light is BAD. Its damaging the cat converter. I would check or replace the spark plug wires ( if all OK, then) replace the coil pack. I would not replace anything unless they test bad. but these car are known for bad coil packs.

Rough Idle trough1500 RPM with trouble

A code P0303 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
  • Faulty spark plug or wire
  • Faulty coil (pack)
  • Faulty oxygen sensor(s)
  • Faulty fuel injector
  • Burned exhaust valve
  • Faulty catalytic converter(s)
  • Running out of fuel
  • Poor compression
  • Defective computer
Possible Solutions If there are no symptoms, the simplest thing to do is to reset the code and see if it comes back.
If there are symptoms such as the engine is stumbling or hesitating, check all wiring and connectors that lead to the cylinders (i.e. spark plugs). Depending on how long the ignition components have been in the car, it may be a good idea to replace them as part of your regular maintenance schedule. I would suggest spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, and rotor (if applicable). Otherwise, check the coils (a.k.a. coil packs). In some cases, the catalytic converter has gone bad. If you smell rotten eggs in the exhaust, your cat converter needs to be replaced. I've also heard in other cases the problems were faulty fuel injectors.

A. P0401 "Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Insufficient Detected" that there is not enough exhaust gas being admitted to the engine.
There are a number of things you can check, and others you need a scan tool to check.
What you can do is check for vacuum to the EGR valve. You can remove the EGR valve and see if it is stuck closed. Test it with a hand vacuum pump and see if it opens smoothly. Check the EGR valve orifice and make sure it is free and clear. Check and clean the EGR passages in the going to and from the EGR valve.
If this checks out, then the Differential Pressure Feedback EGR system will need to be scanned to check the EGR sensors and switches

A code P0301 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
  • Faulty spark plug or wire
  • Faulty coil (pack)
  • Faulty oxygen sensor(s)
  • Faulty fuel injector
  • Burned exhaust valve
  • Faulty catalytic converter(s)
  • Running out of fuel
  • Poor compression
  • Defective computer

Engine shut off, not getting any fire.

usually if no plugs are firing it would be a crank sensor but in the cam area you have a timing belt that keeps the timing between the crank and the cam if that has broken or stripped then it will not start and may have done some extensive damage to the engine.

I just had the same problem. Check the catalytic converter. It took me forever to get over 30 or 40. Drove everyone in the road nuts. They initially thought it was the transmission. Not so, clogged catalytic converter. I got it tuned up and the engine runs fine. Wish I could sasy that about everything else on this lemon!
