Thanks. The car is stuck at a shop after stalling out on the road. Don't have the opportunity to check the filter first. They said would cost $600 to repair. Part was $400 plus labor. Wanted to make sure I wasn't being excessively overcharged. Thanks again!

Try ( repairpal.com ) to enter you make, model year etc., and zip code for pricing in your area. For Buffalo.N.Y. they saying anywhere from $440- $ 650. Has fuel filter been done recently, to rule out that possibility first? What exactly has the car been doing?

personally if I wasn't familar with shop, I'd ask to be present when fuel pressure test performed to confirm pump is shot. BUT would then ask them to just change filter & re-test fuel pressure again, before I allow pump change. If pressure comes back to operating pressure after filter changed, then that's as far as I'd go.

Pump itself costs about $225 (for a complete unit) That varies a bit with manufacturer. Job should not take more than 2.5 - 3hrs (I know I can do it faster than that). Have the fuel filter replaced along with pump. Filters are generally not more than $15 and are generally neglected (good insurance that the job will work!)

Just checked NAPA for pump price... The most expensive pump listed for your vehicle was $304 Is the shop installing the gold plated version??? Dealer prices are likely prety close to that. Well, you are already a "captive" so it probably will cost you more to move the vehicle at this point... But, I'd have some misgivings about using them again for any other work!! Don't forget the filter!
    Good luck,

2004 Chevy Cavalier - car cranks over but won't start

Well, let me try to say this without being too offensive.....
Your car only quit running on you once. I find it really hard to believe that all of the parts you replaced so far, needed to be replaced to get the engine running again. It is EXTREMELY UNLIKELY that all of these "failures" would occur all at the same time.

You would rather pay for $500+ in parts that the car apparently did not need, than to pay to have it towed to a shop where they have the knowledge, training and equipment necessary to properly diagnose the vehicle and get it running again? And now you want someone to tell you what is causing the problem with your vehicle without the benifit of any diagnostic testing?

There is NO WAY that ANYONE can accurately tell you what is wrong with your vehicle without following the correct diagnostic procedures recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. The most anyone can do online without proper diagnosis and testing is GUESS! You seem to be doing that very well on your own.

Where is the fuel pump lacated on the car 2004 chevy cavalier

The fuel pump is located in the fuel tank. The fuel tank will need to be removed from the vehicle in order to service the fuel pump. If you have any questions i'll be happy to answer them. Thank you for using fixya.com!

I have changed the fuel pump twice on a 1998 Chevy Cavalier 2.2 Liter. I have also changed the fuel filter and the relay switch. The fuel pump wont kick on when I turn the key on.

The original Chevy pump motor has a good life. Running the vehicle out of fuel, which will actually run the pump in a dry state can shorten the expected life span considerably. Gasoline is a petroleum product and actually lubricates the inside of the fuel pump. The more you run the vehicle low on fuel or out of fuel, the more damage will occur and the quicker the pump will fail. Try replacing the pump and follow the above procedures for a good performance of the pumps. Cavalier fuel pumps available here

How much should a fuel pump and a fuel filter cost to replace in a '02 chevy malibu? my son was driving it and it just cut out and died. I tried restarting, and it turned over, caughed, sputtered, but did...

I would first make sure that fuel waas your problem by checking for pressure and how much you are getting. I am not sure what the average labor rate in your area is as it differs everywhere but the labor hours per my guide to replace both pump & filter is 2.8 hours. Make sure they go on and replace the screen at the pump if you are changing the pump. I hope this helped and good luck.
