Question about 1996 Toyota Previa

When I start my 1996 Previa the engine revs up wide open

The engine stays wide open so I have to shut it off. It won't allow me enough time to get an error code.
Thanks

I think it has something to do with the mass flow meter. This device tells the injectors how much gas to inject in the cylinders. What do you think? Thanks for your help,.

The pipe going to the supercharger from the cooler was leaking and that fixed the problem. thanks so much for everyone's help

    Merry Christmas, Don

The mass air sensor has nothing to do with excessive RPMs.

The only things that cause excessively high RPMs on your type of vehicle, is a major vacuum leak, or a seized throttle linkage/throttle plate. There is no sensor on your vehicle, that, if failed, would raise the RPMs to an undesirable level. Please check the linkage and the throttle plate. This is where to start our diagnosis. Get the seats up, and the engine exposed; then get back to me.

Go out, lift up the seats and observe the throttle linkage at the throttle body. Move the gas pedal and follow the arms that move when pushing the pedal. Sounds like your throttle plate is stuck open.

Do NOT start the engine whilst doing this.

Get back to me exactly what you see.

Have you removed the intake hose and checked that the buterfly is closed. If so does it open up on its own accord when engine starts. If so check all linkages and return springs. If it has a cable operated throttle and the butterfly is not opening then you have a massive air leak into the manifold via a breather hose or the likes.

My 97 gran prix overheated and shut itself. And now won't start. The Atifrz leaked out and engine overheated.

sometimes when an engine gets hot enough it will stop running due to the metal expansion when it is hot.if it cools off it will probably start but don`t run it very long especially without coolant.the thermostat may have seized in the closed position this sometimes happens as when the car is running the temperature flucuates the stat will close and open all the time(won`t close completely).another problem could be a bad head gasket that allowed coolant into the combustion chamber enough that the motor went into what is called hydraulic lock, coolant has filled the combustion chamber enough that the piston won`t move through out its normal travel.i would try changing the thermostat first refill cooling system and let run until the cooling fans have cycled on and off.if it doesn`t overheat and it cranks over when you try to start it then the stat is more than likely the problem.

not to many local independent repair shop will have the right equipment to test or do correct diagnostic. same way if you have bone problems, you want to go see the bone specialist not an eye doctors, Engine service light could mean one or many things, I would recommend take it to Toyota Dealer and have them do proper diagnostic, Will cost you 70 to 85 bucks, its lot cheaper than guessing and buying parts and hope that will be the right one. Once they do diagnostic they will tell you what it need and you can do the work replacing the part your self. good luck
