either its a short in the electrical harness because it connects right by the trans( it could be because of water , snow ect). or your trans is about to go out period trans lite doesnt always come on to say trans is slipping if check engine lite is on 9 times out of ten trust me the trans is about to go. so have harness checked then trans. and if its a 4.6 like mine get ready to spend around 2000 for rebuild.

It should be right on the side of the distributor, a small ( usually grey ) plastic type box with 4 connections on one end if i remember right.

Sounds like more of a fuel problem to me.Check fuel pressure 35-40psi and or change fuel pump. Any was the car is equip with a TFI module which controls gas, spark and timing. Located in one or two areas.
First spot is in the front of the car next to radiator passenger side. It will be gray in color about 3" long bolted in a heat dispactor. Spot 2 Drviers side of fire wall next to the master cylnder.

This sounds as if the (pcm) Powertrain control module has a ground circuit. It will need to be replaced.

Where is the ignition module control located on 1996 ranger 2.3 e

It does not have an ignition control module. The PCM (powertrain control module) fires the coil pack based on signal it recieves from the crankshaft position sensor and the camshaft position sensor.
