I have never had problems with my 2002 chevy avalanche, but recently I left the light on and battery died. The next morning I tried jumping off etc...but I came to find out that it would not even turn over...
when I stuck the key in, as soon as i turned to "ON" the electrical completely shuts off as if disconnected from battery.
NOTE: I never get to "start" or "ignition", the trucks electrical COMPLETELY shuts down as soon as I get to the on position, and I ahve to wait a while and pump juice thru batt charger to get the power to come back on. PLS HELP!

Re: electrical - turn key on and electrical short
It sounds to me like it's time to replace the battery. How old is the battery (i.e. is it the original)? In my experience I find batteries tend to last 5 years and anything beyond that is just luck ;-) I think most parts stores will do a free battery test for you. Good luck.

I would suggest ignoring the comment from bb1nud since his source of info is the trailblazer, a completely different vehicle that is more similar to the s10. The avalanche would be comparable to a tahoe or fullsize chevy pickup. Anyway, I have a similar issue, the light for the left climate control slider is out, but not the right, lol! Also, a few months earlier the illumination for the PRDNSL display went out, but the rest of the gauge cluster is still illuminated fine, including the odometer.
You avalanche may be in security mode. If this is the case, you will have to call the dealership and get the code. If that is not the case, you have a bad ignition. You will have to change your ignition box and lock cylinder. Make sure your shifter is all the way up, just in case the cable broke.
Turn on the ignition with engine OFF. Try to start engine, then release the key to ON Wait 10 or more minutes till SECURITY TELLTALE turns OFF. Turn OFF the ignition, wait 5 seconds. Repeat this procedure 3 more times, it takes 30 minutes. You must turn the ignition key OFF before starting the engine. To be on the safe side OFF means take the key off, and hold on your hand for 5 seconds. If you missed something visit GM dealer, and they gladly will provide you a print out of this procedure.
You need to remove the carpet on the passengers side and check the wireing harness, take off the tape and visually inspect it.You are likely to find broken splices ,bare wires or wires shorted to each other or to ground.
