Question about 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier

1 Answer

Driver side rear brake locks up when it is wet or rainy out.

This happens when you are going slow and right when you step onthe peddle.

I replaced the wheel cylinder (bled the brakes), shoes and drums. I think it might be in the porportioning valve. How do you trouble shoot it?

any other ideas?

the rear brake is adjusted as low as it goes and there is no binding on the drum. the cylinder is the exact size as the original. including the springs. we pulled one apart at autozone.

i have the same with my 01 cavalier vlx, the car has been great but after just starting, the back passenger rear locks up super easy. worst thing is here there is lots of snow and its worrying when it makes you pull one direction under braking. Also my left rear supension sounds bad its been clunking alot taking bumps at high speed it feels like the is no recoil in the supension on that side any ideas ????

I have the same exact problem on the passenger rear brake. I have replaced the shoes, hardware, adjusters, bled the brake lines front and rear, and taken great pains to adjust passenger and driver side adjusters and I even went to the extreme of new drums and the passenger side brake still locks up. What could possibly be left to try?

The drivers side rear brake shoes may be adjusted to tightly, so that immedatly when you step on the pedal, it locks up. try adjusting them in a bit first. Also, make sure that the wheel cyliner is the correct one, and it is not to big. i have not ever seen a proportioning valve problem on a cavalier.

Brakes keep locking up

Your e-brake cable is causing this, happened to me,my driver side e-cable was bad causing that side to lock up,messed up my drum. You must replace the e-cable.There's a hole on inside plate, maybe with a rubber plug, you can remove plug and get flat head screw driver and put in hole and push star screw to take pressure off brake, but it will keep locking up till you replace e-cable.check your drum to see if brake shoe ate into it,if so replace the other side one to.This problem will cause you u-joint to go bad,did mine.

Brake lines by rear door on drivers side are a common failure point. lines under door failing can cause a total brake failure. Just replace and bleed the lines.

My rear brake lightas are out and i replaced the bulbs on both sides and they are still not working

it may be the switch whitch is located under the dash driver side right above brake peddle arm. when you press the brake peddle the switch button comes out causing the lihts to come on. may just need a little lubricant.

Bad PROPORTION VALVE ... the back brakes should only be doing 30% of the stopping with a bad proportion valve it will send more pressure to the back during braking and cause it to lock up. Good Luck and thanks for using FIX YA

Rear drivers wheel locks up in drive is o.k. in reverse

If no oil on the driver side, you have a locked up parking brake pivot. Follow the park brake cable to the inside plate of the rear wheels. on the outside, where the cable connects, look to see the position of the visible mechanism connected to the cable. It probably will not match the side that is not locked up. This is a very common problem; you need to replace the park brake pivot. Additionally, you are going to need to remove the other side axle shaft and get the leaking oil seal replaced. Replace the brake shoes if they have oil on them.
