Flashing check engine light

I have a 1998 Pontiac Bonneville with about 224,000 miles on it. This morning I started it up to warm it up and when I went back out to drive it the check engine light was flashing. I turned it off and tonight I went out to try it and when I first started it the check engine light was just on. But after I drove it about 2 miles it began to flash again, so I brought it home. After it stared flashing it seamed to run rough. My question is, do you think it would harm the car to drive it about 35 miles to a shop I trust to look at it or should I not chance it and bring it somewhere closer?

If its an orange light its a service engine soon light, the car can be driven, if its a red check engine light DO NOT DRIVE because of risk to damage the engine. However if there is an auto zone close by they will check the light for free. Then I can work with you from there. Good Luck

2000 bonneville starts then dies. Check engine light on

Could be a number of things. If your car starts first thing in the morning and stalls shortly after, only to start again after it sits for an hour, it would be a classic example of a clogged catalytic converter. If it never starts back, I would check the fuel pressure, sounds to me like it could be a clogged fuel filter, faulty fuel pump relay or faulty fuel pump. If you have enough fuel pressure, check for a faulty coil, ignition module, or map sensor vacuum leaks.

I would check to see if the spark plugs are fouled. Or you might have a bad ignition control module (mounted under the coil packs). Auto Zone can test the ignition control module.

usually when the check engine light is flashing it indicates that you need to tune it up. I would replace the plugs and wires. Do it one at a time so you don't forget firing order. Leave comment

do you fill the gas tank with the key on?

Try disconnecting the battery for 1/2 hour an then reconnect and drive for 10 miles. It may run rough for this period. This will clear codes from memory.
