Question about 1996 Mazda Protege

96 Mazda Protege 1.5 L Rattles When Accellerating

For several months when I accelerate, my 1996 Mazda starts to rattle.
It doesn't make the noise when idling. My mechanic cut off some pieces of the catalytic converter that had rusted, still ratles.
It is not the water pump, no leaks etc,
The rattling sounds like metal vibrating against metal, doesn't get any worse it seems, just an annoying sound.
Does any one have a clue. Thank you.

the inside of the cat may be broken, hit the cat with a rubber mallet to verify this.

Possibly the cat itself broken up and rattling in side the silencer especially if more noticeable when engine warmed up.
