Question about 2001 Toyota Camry

My 1999 v6 camry is idling way to fast 1000rpm when hot

It is idling far to fast , when I select Drive there is a clunck from the gear box , what do I have to do to decrease the idle speed, to 700 + or - 500rpm

    I would look for vacuum leaks around the tube going to the intake manifold. Vacuum leaks = a high idle. Also, the throttle plate may be dirty, which may not allow the throttle plate to close completely, which will also hold the idle up. Remove the intake tube from the throttle body in front of the intake manifold, and inspect the throttle plate edge for carbon buildup. Then get back to me.

I would start with checking the spark plug cables in some cases if there is a bad wire it can cause a irratic or high idle being a 96 it is probably fuel injected so i would check the throttle cable and throttle body it may need some cleaning or a sensor may be off such as the idle control valve.

Fast idle cold to hot

to fast hot and too fast cold that it?
well here is normal, its a G16 engine, a Vitara with Sidekick badge.
G16 in cold weather, start and race idle at about 1500 rpm
or more if in ALASKA, you never said that or how cold it is.
the IAC valve is thermal, it and opens more colder, a fact.
the 8valve engine (black steel top) is faster. cold idle
then drops in a few seconds, to 1500rpm
at this time, the ECU brain does NOT control idle speeds at all.
the the engine warms up by virtue of the thermostat
as it warms to 150F to on way to 180f stock temp.
the ECU then takes control of the idle speeds.
got that so far?
so at 180f the idle is 800 rpm (800 is hard coded in the ECU,
ad ECU regulates this, unless you turn on the A.C , and if that happens 1000rpm is called up.
if not the ECU cant control it or the ECU is in limphome mode or worse.

if you insert the diagnostic jumper
does the CEL lamp flash 12s
it must.
see this paper clip this is your only scan tool.
it is crude but that is all you get until 1996.

What is wrong with my car when it jerks in drive

jerks when?

moving the shift lever. with hand?

moving car. in gear,name the gear, drive, L or reverse?

jerks from, 1 to 2nd gear, 2nd to 3? or ? (or when IT down shifts)

pretend we are blind (we are) and cant drive car,(hopeless) and

tell us exactly what works and dont work driving.

hot /cold engine, fast /slow/ accelerating/ decelerating, up hills and what gears.

if engine is hot, is your idle at 800 RPM parked, in park.


if not the idle controls are out of control and when you shift to drive

IT will jerk. this is an engine problem.

there are lots of other symptoms.

Cuts out or idles to high

it is a dangerous car to drive like this, "TOYOTA LIKE" dig?
if you are a toyata person the floor mats hit throttle pedal and gee....
is the dash cluster lamp called CEL glowing driving
if yes, scan the ECU/PCM read out the error numbers.
Like P0300 gross misfire. etc.
ever do a full 60k mile tuneup, ? why not, if not?

first tell the symptoms , of a hot and cold engine.
diagnosis takes facts and evidence. you offered some....
you start car cold ,does it idle fast (normal) then you drive
and idle is ok? near 800> until hot. see how that works.? the Fuelng
system works by temperatures of the engine coolant .
my guess your post is all HOT engine.

too fast idle HOT, this means the ISC (hot) is out of control
ISC is a system, not just 1 part. so dont buy an ISC.
The ISC is idle speed controls. and is the first to fail, this control
when there is any problems with,well, anything , under hood.
The ISC can get dirty and jam and may just need to be cleaned.
this is all part of normal turn up service, ask him why idle is high
i promise you , he will tell you. (ASE patch on sleeve)

the first thing to learn, on all EFI is which of the 4 systems yours is.
1999 era was only 2, AD and SD systems.
or MAP or MAF based EFI. (air or speed density systems)
i login to and see?
there are 2 engines, a inline 4 and a V6, is MAF.

both engines have the cam timing belt if ignored, both engines
grenade with belt slipped or snapped. dont let that happen.
id never drive any honda , running bad, until the belt is checked 1st.
see why? $3000 new engines are VISA breakers.

OK my easement: (with limited inputs)
too fast hot idle on any MAF engine.
ISC stuck .
ECU in limphome mode, (scan it) and idle controls are shut down on purpose.
air leaks, is not it, if MAF engine, as leaks there cause lean and lean is slow idle (outofcontrol)

tell more, get more.

How to adjust base idle speed 0n 1998 toyota camry 5s Fe

This should be set by the idle speed sensor but on some units there is an adjustment on the throttle cable stop. Have a mechanic do the job as if you upset the sensor settings too far the cpu will give you grief.. Normal idle will be about 900-1000rpm hot or about 1200 cold for a few minutes,

Iconverted my v6 engine to 3x with v6 gear box but it can not move very well. i mean when i select drive it can not move as usual what do i do?

This sounds rather like the No 1 or 2 shift solenoid has failed. This does happen in older V6 cars, but it should cause the O/D indicator light to blink a trouble code when the O/D switch is on.

If it were an IAC problem it would do it in reverse also. A bad engine mount can cause shaking in one direction but not the other, Also check your vacum hoses and lines.

The D stands for drive.. This will make your car go forward :) if your car is revving too high in park you can change the idle speed with a screw on either the fuel injection system or the carburettor depending on what the v6 camry uses
