Have a compression test printed out and see if there is a difference between any of the cylinders,this should give you a good indication of the problem.The mechanic should do a wet and dry test to determine where the fault is before stripping the engine.If he can't do this he should not be working on your car.

Freelanders are nightmares, coolant consumption is normal on these suv's, as crazy as that sounds. filling up the coolant overflow every oil change is not uncommon. I would start by a hard reset, which is this connect the battery and how the positive and negative battery cables together for about 5 seconds. This is going to clear whatever is stored in your suv's computer, and try starting it.

If the obvious does nt work your need to figure out what that code is, from the dealership, im sure its more than just one if their is a no start condition and their is a code for the PCM.

Its not completely out of the question that it jumped timing, a long shot, but none the less a possibility. but there should be some codes that complement that diagnosis.

Now i KNOW there are some bulletins out on CERTAIN PCM codes pertaining to the freelander, but you have to figure out exactly what codes are stored in the system
