Jeep runs into the red...no heat and engine cuts off. there is also black soot coming from exhaust

Sometimes a bad map sensor will cause this.

Your "Check Engine" light will come on, the exhaust should smell worse than normal, the engine MAY refuse to run well at higher road speeds (if the catalytic plugs the exhaust pipe), and most importantly... if you crawl under the vehicle with it fully warmed up and bring your hand near the catalytic converter, it'll be hotter than the rest of the exhaust system if it's still functioning. If it's not functioning any more, it'll be the same temperature as the rest of the exhaust system.

A good catalytic converter may be hot enough to glow dull red after it's warmed up. That's why the manufacturer always wraps heat shields around them, to keep that heat away from the paint under your vehicle and keep the excess heat from entering the passenger compartment.

Sometimes if the throttle has been dirty for a while the engine will have been running rich due to lack of air intake. When this happens the O2 sensor on the exhaust manifold gets covered in soot and as a result is no longer able to measure oxygen levels in the exhaust accurately. If the O2 sensor sends a low voltage signal to the ECU (high level of oxygen in exhaust) the ECU tries to compensate by increasing injection times and this further enriches the intake mix. The end result is a lumpy idle and heavy fuel consumption. You may not yet have a check engine light but it might be a good idea to have your diagnostics scanned for any stored error codes. Failing that remove the O2 sensor and check it's condition if it's black with soot then you will know what is now causing it. Either change it or, since you have nothing to lose, use a plumbers burner to heat the O2 tip to red hot to burn off residues. Hope this gives you some avenues to think about.

Black smoke from exhaust, rough idle, black soot on plugs


signs of a bad fuel pressure regulator-- the vehicle will run rough, the engine will not start ( usually in the mornings,) many times engine starts but stalls shortly after starting. a bad regulator can result in fouled plugs. replacement is only cure. 1- black soot on plugs-2-black smoke from tailpipe-3- running rough-4- stalling, good-day! repost if need be.

I have a 1983 toyota pick up truck with the 22r engine.The problem is it runs rough when it is idling and black soot is coming from the exhaust.I have a manual choke which works fine.I have put a new pvc...


It shouldn't run at all with the solenoid disconnected. That should be 'ON' when the engine is on, or it won't run. Maybe the solenoid circuit is dirty so that it only opens a bit, or the fuel it allows through is limited by a dirty passage. I wonder why the wires were disconnected in the first place. It shouldn't run if that is the case!

black soot is a running rich condition it's getting to much gas not enough air .. 14-1 ratio air to gas your carb rebuild needs to be rechecked for sticking float..

Black soot in water? You mean water in the tailpipe or black soot in the coolant in the radiator? Have you tested the manifold air temp sensor and the throttle position sensor? If they were OK, you may just have worn injectors that are allowing a bit too much fuel flow or a bad spray pattern. In the meantime, you could try replacing the plugs with a set that is one heat range hotter. If the plugs become slightly fouled, that can cause a snowball effect which makes the situation worse.
