Question about 1999 Volkswagen Golf

1998 mark4 golf s tfi 90bhp, looks like ait lock in fuel sytem, removed aitlock with pump, but after drving for 10 mins, engine cuts outs, suspected air lock again, check all pipes and connections- OK, also replaced fuel filter...

    Thanks for your quick reply Steve, it certainly does sound strange as nothing has chnaged with the fuel cap (i.e no damage by dropping). But i can check since you mentioned its a "sealed sytem" (still trying to work out what exactley that means) what your saying is if i didnt have my fuel cap on while started it would get air in the system - i didnt know that..

    Co-incidently the problem started to occur as soon as I poured in unusually thick used veg oil (I "forgot" to mention this bit - hoping its not to do with this, but its a factor)...It already had half a tank of veg oil and diesel mixture which is why i continued to pur as it would get diluted.. ( i have been using veg oil for over 5k miles in 1 year no probs at all, plus a fuel heater after the fuel-filter to thin down viscosity)...

    I tried to syphon the fuel out, but its seems normal viscosity as I am used as I also topped up with another 5 litres of diesel, so i didn't syphon it all out-

    I think also the fuel delivery pipe and ruturn pipe to the fel filter are the wrong way round, but it has worked this way for nearly 8 months ( I will get this part it sorted sunday but this is a seocndary issue).

Hi this may sound strange but have you made sure the fuel cap seals too!! i had a car brought to me once with a similar problem after a bump and i spent ages trying to work out why it was getting air in the fuel, i tried alsorts but it turned out to be the fuel cap not sealing, as its a sealed system it can get in anywhere, Hope this helps

1998 f250 5.4l would not start. changed feul pump and filter still would not start. 20 mni later started. was cleaning engine while running 10 15 min later died wont start.

Check fuel pressure at the injector rail. Could be your fuel pump relay is cutting out. If fuel pressure is good, check for sparks at the plug wires. Read the link below for more info.

Where is the fuel pump relay located on a mk4 golf tdi 90bhp

The fuel pump relay is no.# 4 relay in the bottom row counting from the left to the right, placed in the fuse box / relay plate fascia 2, inside the car above pedals. See pictures below:

My 1998 Cabrio engine keeps cutting out, if I hit 3000rpm in first it cuts, 2000 rpm in second it cuts, 1500rpm in third it cuts. Either it cuts or goes completely dead. Any ideas? I heard it can be the 02...

Fuel pressure problem, O2 does not send info to ECM during accelaration so cant be that, catalytic converter doesn't cause check engine light to come on, try changing fuel filters

Start with the simple and replace the fuel filter, it's also a good thing to clean the throttle body with throttle body cleaner. Auto Zone will have the fuel filter and can give you the step by step instructions for you to replace the fuel filter with common tools. You can also ask for the step by step instructions for replacing the fuel pump if you think it's the pump has gone bad too. Good luck

If that is carbureted, and has a mechanical fuel pump, try running a length of fuel line from inlet side of pump to a gas can that has fresh, clean fuel, and if it runs good that way, you know problem is most likely in the tank. Removing the tank & cleaning it out is best solution from there. I'd even be tempted to add a small bottle or 2 of Lucas Fuel Sytem Cleaner to first fill in clean tank, just to help clean lines as well as carb.

Golf gti runs for 7 min then cuts out

It could be your coil unit. They can operate intermittently like that. try cooling it down with water/air (a bit risky) when you suspect the car is going to cut out. Even the coil pack is not overheating it could still be faulty (not properly earthing) try swopping the pack with a friend's one.
