Severe crunch sound with ABS system, plus ECS light goes on.
Hello, and thank you for your help. I have driven my 2006 thru 3 Chicago winters and have never had this experience... We just had our first snow in Chicago this winter. When I brake on dry, clear roads everything is perfect. When I brake on snowy, icy roads, I get a repeated crunching sound...similar to the sound snow makes when you pack it down. It repeats, and then the ECS light flashes on, off, on etc. At this time the car feels as if it is not braking at all.
I took it to a Hyundai service center who assured me that the braking system was working as it is supposed to and that it was simply the ABS system kicking in. In 3 Chicago winters, I have never heard this sound. Plus, the ECS light never came on before. Is this a warning light, or is it telling me "Hey, ECS engaged, and doing its job."

Your noisy experience with your ABS and ECS is exactly what all of these systems do in icy, snowy, and any environment that causes your tires to lose traction. The ECS light when blinking or illuminated is just informing you that the ECS is being activated to let you know your traction is limited.
I have an Elantra and have driven my GF's '06 Sonata many times. I live in MN and it does the same thing with snow etc. and so has past cars i've owned such as Subaru Legacy, Pontiac Grand Prix, and Toyota Camry.
With ABS it does seem to take quite some distance to stop in icy or snowy conditions. When it's dry it's impossible to beat.

Abs problems will only show up when the tires are slipping when the brakes are applied such as on ice or rainwater on the road and will often sound like a crunching sound inside the vehicle as the abs system pulse the braking system. There is no other symptoms when the tires are not slipping. If your vehicle is not stopping otherwise then you will need to have the brakes serviced, or have new tires installed if there is not much treads left on the tires!
I would say it is more likely that your wheel bearing hub locked up and caused the light to come on. You could have a severe brake fault too. Either one you should have had some noises or other indicators of the problem. Good luck, don't drive the vehicle until you get to a garage.
stabilitrak system is controlled by the abs module. Its job is to maintain
vehicle stability in situations where you may normally lose control by
activating the abs system and/or changing the valving in the shock absorbers.
When the message is displayed there is a problem in the system, could be an
issue with a sensor or wiring. There are a couple of common problems with the
system that require reprogramming the engine control module and the abs module.
This must be performed at the dealer. The only way to know exactly what the
issue is would be to have the abs computer scanned for trouble
codes. GM issued a couple of tech bulletins in regards to owners having this problem. I hope this helps.

One of the wheel sensors is probably defective ...They back themselves out of their mounting...Or the wheel hub reluctor is rusted...you have a couple of options...Pull the INDIC fuse (10A) from the interior fuse box turning off the light...Power down the EBCM by pulling the PCM/IGN fuse # 5 (30A)...Drive and see if you notice any ill effects...If not, the ABS is disabled...

The Chevrolet/GM autos rely on a Kelsey ABS actuator system that is electronically controlled. I know its hard to describe sounds, but is it possible the crunch is a hum? If the ABS light comes on and goes off after restart it means one of two things. That the ABS controller is going bad or the speed sensors on the wheels have come loose or gone bad. Under your hood there is a fuse compartment that contains the fuse that controls the ABS system on your vehicle. Its a 60 Amp fuse and large.. Look in your owners manual for its location. . Check it with the vehicle OFF to make sure its not blown or cracked. Leave the fuse disconnected and start the car. The ABS light should STAY on as well as the parking brake light. Test your brakes by pressing down on them while the car is in park and not moving.. do you hear the sound. If you DONT hear the sound then the ABS control module is causing the brake pump to work continuously and thus your "noise". YOu can confirm by placing the fuse back in place and then listening to the car about where the drivers door is... do you hear a hum? If so you can leave the fuse disconnected to deactivate the ABS module. The brakes will still function you just WONT have ABS capability. Confirm this with a very slow roll from park or neutral and press brakes to stop. If you dont hear the noise or a hum, reconnect the fuse and take the car for a drive. Turn to the left and right while applying the brake at an intersection.. vehicle in motion slightly. Do you notice that the ABS light or noise occurs turning one way or the other or both? If it comes on during the turn then the ABS sensor in that wheel or both wheels need to be inspected and possibly replaced. Finally, you need to inspect the brake pads for wear..typically however brake pads have WEAR INDICATORS built in and will start to SQUEAL when you apply the brakes telling you time to replace pads. If its a squeal and not a crunch then have pads replaced. Finally, be sure and make sure you dont have any rocks or road debris within the brake area or between teh pads and the rotors. That would be your final area to review for a CRUNCH noise.
