Question about 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Sudden shut down

I was driving my '96 jeep grand cherokee laredo when all of a sudden the engin shutdown. the headlights, 4-ways and dome lights were all working, but when I put the key in the ignition nothing happens, no clicking, no dash lights, NOTHING! What can be the problem?

Hmm, this sounds like a electrical problem involving the ignition control module (computer) or the body control module.  They may not be bad but they are not getting power.  This could be due to one of many connection or relay problems.  Unless you know how to diagnose electrical problems yourself, you will need to get it to the shop.

spray the slider that controls it with electrical contact cleaner and move it all the way up and down a couple of times. mine did the same and resolved it that way 3 months ago.

crank shaft sensor, as soon as car warms up, it will skip (engine stutter(, then when engine cools, so does crank shaft sensor. Good Luck

1999 Grand Cherokee Limited Jeep anti-theft system had shut all electronics down and engine will not start. what can I do to reset the system....


The 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo Anti-Theft System is equipped with Vehicle Theft Security System (VTSS). VTSS system monitors vehicle doors, hood, liftgate and ignition. If an attempt is made to enter or operate vehicle without proper disarming of system, vehicle horn will sound, headlights, taillights and parking lights will flash, and engine will be prevented from running.

The following wiring diagram and electronics circuit contains detail schematics of The 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo Anti-Theft System. Herein you will find interconnection between electronics parts of the system such as body control module, auto headlamp light sensor. VTSS led, driver door module, passenger door module, cylinder lock switch, junction block, power distribution center, and grounding. The brake lights on my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee won't shut off.


The brake light switch is defective or out of adjustment. More than likely located on the brake pedal arm near the top.

96 grande cherokee has short in/around pcm,it cuts out when wiggl


Remove the harness plug and check each pin for corrosion and connection to the wire behind it. The problem is a wire or wire connection, but I can't tell you which one but likely its a ground or power lead as sensors would usually not shut it off but would give you a component failure code and check engine light.

Dome lights wont shut off stereo turns on but no sound


remove seats and pull carpet. now see which wires they melted with that torch. Tape them up so they aren't shorting out any more as best you can.

'96 Jeep Grand Cherokee -driver door shows ajar, dome light is on


remove the door switch, clean and reinsert. It switched ground to a black cable, which goes to the PCM.
