Many things to check. Wonder if this work was done to alleviate problem or problem was from doing the work.

Putting gas fumes in a 21:1 compression cylinder is sure way to ruin engine.

2 possible problems are losing your diesel fuel draw from an air leak in the fuel lines and an inoperative glow plug timer.

When you change a fuel filter you lose the vacuum lock that is in the fuel lines. Some mechanics add fuel to the new filter to remove some of the air and promote fuel draw. The O rings on the injector lines are a special type which resists petroleum products. Using cheap O rings will cause problems.

Glow plug timer-there is a power Relay to the timer and the timer itself is a type of Relay. You should hear clicking noise and lights should dim as timer provides power to the glow plugs.

Other things to check would be the Vacuum pump as Diesels work differently than gas engines and require a pump to supply Vacuum. Covering the intake suggests engine needs a Vacuum draw.

Weak fuel pump. Too weak to pressurize or draw fuel. Can be measured with pressure gauges.

Really bad rings could also cause symptoms.

Would be interested knowing what proved to be wrong.

I smell gas when driving my 97 land rover discovery. I do already know I need a fuel pump. Is the gas coming from too much being injected into the engine, thus leaking out because of the bad fuel pump?...

I know that if a fuel pressure regulator is bad it will emit the fuel smell under hood. but just be sure you have no fuel leaks in the fuel lines first. good-day !

Would this have something to do with why my 1992 Ford E150 Econoline Van is not getting the fuel flow to the engine? I was told the van has one fuel pump that is above the Gas tank and one in my engine and...

the most likely solution is that there is a blockage in your fuel lines. this can happenfrom time to time since not all fuels are pure.
a good way to confirm this is to check your fuel filter as it may be clogged from 'filtering' out the bad stuff in the fuel.
worst case scenario, you will need a new fuel pump, or 2 in your situation.

Theres a gas tank leak comining from the top of the gas tank. what could this be /

Not knowing your milage or what part of the country you live in if they use salt on the roads. The leak is coming form the three fuel lines going into the gas tank and fuel pump. The fuel pump is inside of the gas tank secured by a large slip ring seal. From the years gone by these lines rust and since they are under pressure they will leak through. You will have to drop your gas tank to get to this. This is a ugly all day expensive job. Replace the fuel pump which comes with the new seal and fuel lines assembly. I could sit here and tell you the step by step procedure but that will take hours. The very best thing you can do is buy a Haynes repair manual for your car and year at any auto parts store @ Advanced, Autozone. Read the step by step in the manual. I have used these for 40 years with all my vehicles and saved tons of cash in labor costs. Be prepared to replace the gas tank straps and additional fuel lines depending on how bad the rust is.
Good luck and thanks for your question and I hope my suggestions help. Don't forget to rate me.

if you are getting water out then I would drain all the gas/water out. Water is heavier then gas, so once you drain all the gas out I would put known good gas in, you may want to change the filter. First I would get all the bad gas out and put new gas in, take some wd40 spray it in the intake and get it til it will run on it own, once this is done I then would change the filter to be on the safe side. Hope this helped tim

CAUTION
Three styles of fuel pressure regulators and fuel rails will be used in this model year. Each regulator has a different "footprint" that consequently changes the size of the receiving port in the fuel rail. The regulator retaining clips are specific to each rail-regulator design and cannot be interchanged.

2002 yukon hard to start, where is the fuel filter and how to replace it.

FIRST RELIEF FUEL PRESSURE BY REMOVING GAS CAP REMOVE FUEL PUMP RELAY START ENGINE UNTIL IT DIES LACK OF FUEL. FUEL FILTER IS MOUNTED TO THE RIGHT FRAME RAIL.NEAR THE FUEL TANK.YOU NEED A FLARE NUT WRENCH TO LOOSEN FUEL LINE AT FILTER AND A ADJUSTABLE WRENCH HOLD FILTER LARGE NUT WHILE LOOSEN FUEL LINE THIS KEEP FROM TWISTING FUEL LINES WHILE LOOSEN FUEL LINE.BESURE TO GO TO DEALERSHIP AND BUY NEW O - RINGS AT FUEL FILTER LINES.LUBRICATE NEW O- RINGS WITH CLEAN ENGINE OIL.WHEN INSTALLING NEW FUEL FILTER DONT OVER TIGHTEN FUEL LINES CUTTINGTHE O -RINGS AT FUEL FILTER.IF SO THEY WILL LEAK GAS WHEN YOU START UP ENGINE.WHEN DONE CHECK FOR GAS LEAKS WHEN DONE DONT DRIVE UNTIL YOU CHECK FOR LEAKS FIRST.

Engine cranks but doesnt run

It almost sound like a bad coolant temperature sensor, but that is just a shot in the dark. I did have a 1995 LeBaron that had the same problem, and it had a bad coolant sensor. Is the check engine light on? Are you getting spark when it cranks but won't run? The fuel pressure itself, may have something to do with it, and with fuel pumps, they have a PSI specification, but there is also a volume of fuel amount, such as 1 pint in 15 seconds, I'm not sure what that amount is for you vehicle, but that maybe something to consider. I'd check for any vacuum leaks too.

FIRST OF ALL RELIEVE THE FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE.RAISE AND SAFELY SUPPORT THE VECHICLE ON JACK STANDS.USING A BACKUP WRENCH REMOVE THE FUEL LINE FITTINGS FROM THE FUEL FILTER.FOR THE LINE DISCONNECT SIDE OF FUEL FILTER. SQUEEZE BOTH TAB IN. SO YOU CAN REMOVE FUEL LINE FROM FUEL FILTER.REMOVE THE FUEL FILTER MOUNTING SCREWS AND REMOVE THE FILTER FROM THE VECHICLE.REPLACE THE O RING WITH A NEW ONE LUBRICATE O RING WITH A LITTLE ENGINE OIL.TIGHTEN FUEL LINE TO FILTER CONNECTORS 22 FT LBS. THE 2.3L ENGINE RELIEF FUEL PRESSURE LOOSEN FILLER CAP.REMOVE FUEL PUMP FUSE LET ENGINE IDLE UNTIL IT DIES FROM LACK OF FUEL.THE 3.3L ENGINE RELIEF FUEL PRESSURE BY INSTALLING FUEL PRESSURE GAUGE TO THE FUEL PRESSURE TEST PORT WHICH IS THE SCHRAEDER VALVE WITH CAP.ITS ON THE FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR ASSEMBLY.USE A SHOP TOWEL AROUND CONNECTION TO CATCH FUEL SPRAY.YOU CAN USE A SMALL TINY SCREW DRIVER AT PORT ALSO BUT COVER IT WITH TOWEL TO CATCH FUEL SPRAY.WARNING GO TO DEALERSHIP TO BUY O- RING THAT GOES ON THE FUEL LINE TO FUEL FILTER.IT LOOKS TAN.TAKE THE OLD O-RING TO GET THE CORRECT SIZE O- RING TO FUEL LINE TO FILTER.DONT USE ANY KIND O - RING GASOLINE WILL DISSOLVE IT YOU WILL HAVE A MASSIVE GAS LEAK.WHEN YOU FINISH PUTTING NEW FUEL FILTER IN PLACE ALL FUEL LINES CONNECTED.MAKE SURE WHEN YOU INSTALL NEW FUEL FILTER YOU HEAR OR FEEL THE DISCONNECT SNAP IN PLACE ON THE FUEL FILTER.PULL IT A LITTLE MAKE SURE ITS IN PLACE.WHEN ALL FINISH AND DONE.TURN IGNITION SWITCH ON POSITION ENGINE OFF 3 SECONDS CHECK FOR LEAKS.IF YOU GET LEAK FUEL LINE O - RING LEAKING BECAUSE TOO BIG TOO LOOSE OVER TIGHTEN DAMAGE O - RING.
