Question about 1997 Toyota Tercel
1995 Toyota Tercel, automatic transmission.
Not the Fuel filter - I just replaced it.
Could it be a "speed sensor" of some sort? This car doesn't have a speed sensor on the transmission (says the Toyota dealer). Where is the speed sensor (crankshaft position sensor?) that sends a signal to the speedometer?
Where is the distributor (which houses the crankshaft position sensor)? I can't see it.
Could be low fuel pressure (where is the connection to hook a pressure gage to, to check this?).

Check the water pump.
there is no distributor. this engine has a direct ignition with 2 coil packs. coil pack one sends the spark to cylinders 1 and 4, and coil pack two goes to cylinders 2 and 3. you will see them right on top of the engine.

THE FUEL PRESSURE TEST PORT IS ON THE METAL FUEL SUPPLY RAIL FOR THE FUEL INJECTORS, IT LOOKS LIKE A TIRE VALVE BUT METAL, U NEED A TEST GUAGE, THEY ARE CHEAP FROM KRAGEN OR AURTZONE, THIS SURE SOUNDS LIKE A PRESSURE ISSUE, U WILL HAVE TO WATCH THE PRESSURE WHEN THE PROBLEM OCCURS AT 70MPH

The engine misses a little bit as I approach 70 MPH, then turns off, car coasts down to about 65 mph, and engine turns on again.
All is well up to 65 mph.

The fuel pressure is about 40 psi at low speeds, and about 55 psi at high speeds. No drop in fuel pressure when the engine begins to turn off.
What do you suggest?

does the engine just shut off like the key was turned off, or does it slowly loose power and stall.
My son had same problem with his F150. Just died going down the road. Problem was the throttle positioning sensor (TPS). Replaced it, and good to go.
