i have the same problem! just got the car so i havn't experienced 1st and 2nd gears yet!! Reverse is working too. However, when i put it into reverse there is quite a clunk as it goes into gear. so i am going to change the oil and filter, by the way, does anyone know where the trans fluid filter is pls!

also research into this has pointed to the "tcu" which, due to poor capacitor

quality can put the car into "limp mode" this is why it is in 3rd. so you can get home or to a garage.

There are people out there who can repair these, as they are v. expensive.

all i can say now is i hope the fluid and filter works!!!!!

I have the same problem. Its a 93 GTO Auto. The gearbox turned into a box of pieces due to the gearbox ecu failing (I think). I had a replacement gearbox and transfer box fitted, plus a replacement tcu. The car drives fine but is stuck in 3rd gear limp home mode. Reverse works fine also. Does anyone know where I can get this repaired? Thanks!

My 1991 Mitsubushi GTO has been experiencing the same thing since we bought it. The previous owner changed the transmission and told us it needed a replacement transmission control module. The TCM was replaced with a used one and worked for a few weeks and then stopped working again. I am looking to purchase a rebuilt TCM and see what happens. I also wonder if it could be caused by the engine control unit. I have read where they have been issues with older car models.

Your transmissions need to be service (fluid and filter change) and possibly a TCU replacement. Do NOT go to a dealer. Instead, look on ebay or craigslist for part outs. Transmission control units can be expensive but that is most likely the problem if you already changed ur fluid.

Tranny stuck in 3rd gear

If it's a manual and it's stuck in 3rd gear, it could be the clutch master or slave cylinder does not have enough hydraulic fluid to release the clutch.

If it's an automatic, then there is an internal problem to the transmission. Possibly the shift solenoid is plugged up or damaged or defective.

If it's an automatic and you can't shift out of the 3rd gear, at the shifter, then there is a problem with the transmission linkage, maybe.

Could be you dorked your transmission controller when you replaced the battery. Hope not. Did you hook it up backwards or something by mistake, even for a second?
