Question about 2002 Ford Explorer
Ford Explorer since 1995 has been using an in-door switch for the door jamb. Older versions used a plunger that you could easily test with with your fingers. The common problem is that the switch is not closed, this will cause your dome lite to be on, door ajar light on, and will malfunction any aftermarket auto alarm. Replace the switch, this is a known Ford problem.

I had this problem on my 2003 explorer and took WD40 and gave the lock mechanism a good dose where it meets the clasp on the door jam. Then open and close the doors a couple of times to get them working. They get gummed up and sometimes have a tendency to stick.

most likely you have a door switch problem, you must take to shop to have it scanned, and they can tell you what door it is. most times it is drivers door, because that is the door that gets the most use.

Hi, one of the switches has gone bad or it's wire has come loose. First try squirting a little WD-40 into the switches one at a time and then pushing the button in several times to see if the ajar light will go out. If it does, you have found the bad switch. If the problem comes back, then replace the switch. There is a goor write up with pictures here: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=249253
