Open the fuel tank and have someone listen to the opening, then go inthe car and turn the key to the on posision you dont have to start it just turn to on, there should be a short whinning sound made at the fuel tank this is it priming from being energized. this will tell you if your getting power and if your fuel pump is turning on.

it is most likely your fuel pump, other things that could be bad but are less likely are your mpi relay and your ignition switch, if you get a 20 dollar chiltons manual from the autostore it will tell you how to manually power the fuel pump to see if it turns on, but mostlikely it is your pump, let me know how it goes. take care and good luck

You are saying the engine cranks but does not start, right ?
Does it sound like it has compression ? If not could be a broken timing belt.

As with any no start issue, someone would need to figure out if you are dealing with a no spark or no fuel problem to proceed.

Sounds like the the Bendix is bad in the starter, which pushes out the drive gear to engage the flywheel. You'll need to replace the Bendix or the starter. It's a bit tough to get to the starter, it is underneath the intake manifold.

Engine coolant temp sensor, If you pull it you will be able to see if it is cracked.. I don't know why but the original sensors they designed the ceramic tips crack around the tip of the head.. It will make the car nearly impossible to start smoke when cranking the engine, and idle really rough racey infact. 15 dollars or so let me know if that worked for you

Fuel system

Car is not seeing rpm's. Sounds like a bad crank sensor. The rpms signal the pump to turn on while the vehicle is running.

97 saturn sc2

I had the same problem with a 97 sc2. The fix for my car was the temp sensor that controls the extra fuel when engine is cold it didn't sense that the engine was warmed up and added extra fuel flooding the engine.
