Question about Mercedes-Benz 420-Series

1 Answer

I have a 1995 S420 U.S model, I am the first and only owner. the car only has 20,000 original miles. no accident or even a dint or scratch on the car, maintained regularly. never had any problem . The air cond just failed last week, I took it to a Firestone station as I know the owner, he changed the Dry Bottle and the High Pressure hoses and some valves and clamps, refill the cooling agent, one day later , no air cond again. he filled it up again and failed again. I was told that it is very possible that there is a leak in the "evaporetor" which is inside the dashboardand, too troublesome for him to do the check and replacing job, as the whole dash needs to be removed and he does not have the hands to do it, is it ture ? ( surely I have a refund for the money I paid him less the cost of the parts which is under 200.)is there any shop specialized in Air Cond who can do the job and how much could it cost ? I live in Diamond Bar, CA 91765. Any suggestion ?

Thank you for your information. I have just had an conversation with another friend who is an mechanic works for Toyota dealer, he basically said the same thing, however, I will have to take the car to him and leave the car there and give him the time to test. I am considering to do so.

    Thanks again.

Di he put a tracer dye, usualy green,in when he recharged the aircon? It will usualy show a leak pretty quick,You may have a pressure safety switch thats faulty, usualy screwed into the aircon pump on the high pressure side and if it senses a low pressure problem it shuts the air con down to protect itself. It will have two wires running to it and joining the two wires will reactivate the aircon. Not advisable to leave wired up in this way as the air con charge also lubricates the pump and running it dry will require pump replacement if left running too long.Cant help with air con specialist as im in australia Good luck

My 2007 Nissan Sentra has terrible traction. The tires have 20 thousand miles on them.

most of the original tires on these cars aren't much good in foul weather after 15-20,000 miles, you need to replace those tires with ones with good all-weather or a true snow tire tread. I'm assuming you have been having snow.

1995 buick regal stutters when going up hill

I would check the fuel pressure. You may need to repalce the fuel filter, should be done about every 20,000 miles.

Eec fuse keeps blowing on mercury mystique

When you go to wide open throttle, the only thing that happens is your a/c cut out is activated by the throttle position sensor. I owuld check there, but it is very rare that the TPS would cause a fuse to blow.
You may have an engine wire harness that has the wiing insulation decomposing causing wires to short against each other. Peel open the plastic convolute and look for cracks in the insulation. Here is info on a Ford program to repair if less than 100,000 miles on your car.

October, 1999
To:
All Ford and Lincoln-Mercury Dealers
Subject:
Owner Notification Program 99M03 - Certain 1995-1997 Contour and Mystique vehicles - Under Hood Wire Harness - Additional Coverage.
PROGRAM TERMS:
This program provides extended coverage on certain under hood wire harnesses through 10 years or 100,000 miles which ever occurs first, from the original warranty start date. AFFECTED VEHICLES
Certain 1995 - 1997 Contour and Mystique vehicles built from Job #1 1995 through Model Year End 1997. REASON FOR RECALL
Under ambient factors of high temperature and high humidity, certain 1995 - 1997 Contour and Mystique vehicles may be susceptible to the wiring insulation becoming brittle and cracking on certain engine compartment wiring harnesses. These harnesses deliver electrical power to the engine and its cooling and control systems, the climate control, and other power distribution systems. If wire harness insulation cracking is found during the additional warranty period, the under hood wire harnesses are to be replaced at no charge to the customer. SERVICE ACTION
Additional Warranty Coverage
Effective immediately, Ford is providing additional coverage for the replacement of the under hood wire harnesses on these vehicles for a period of 10 years or 100,000 miles, which ever occurs first, from the original warranty start date. This coverage exceeds the provisions of the original component warranty coverage on the affected vehicles and is automatically transferred to subsequent owners at no charge. This additional coverage does not include normal service diagnostic or repair charges unrelated to wire harness brittleness and cracking. After this additional coverage has expired, wire harness replacements will be at the expense of the vehicle owner.

Tune up

At 60,000 you should have all the major things done if you haven't already:
oil change(every 3000)
air filter change(every 15,000)
coolant flush(every 30,000)
spark plugs and wires(every 30,000)
transmission fluid & filter change(every 30,000)
brakes (as needed)
PCV valve (every 20,000)

You can wait until about 75000 miles to do your timing belt.

Hope this helps
