2002 Chevrolet Impala overheating while idling

While highway driving engine temp is fine when idling at lights or in stp n go traffic the car will overheat, fluid level is fine (no loss of fluid) as soon as the car is in motion the temp drops to a safe level

2002 Impala will get over heated (not all the way, but pass the halfway mark). If you turn it off when the heat gauge is pass 1/2 way, then try to start it after a short stop, if will not start. After 15 - 30 minutes of just sitting there, it will start up. Sometimes it will start, but chokes out and dies.

The thermostates on the 3400 engines are late because the fans kick in at the last moment. if you run your ac on you will notice that the gauge stays in front of the half mark or right on the half mark. that is because when you turn on your ac your fans will kick in earlier and stay on the whole time the ac is on. if you run your car with the heat on or nothing on that leaves the late thermostate to kick in verus you turning on your ac and it by passes the thermostates and runs the fans once the engine gets at at lest 120 deg. i use to have a 2002 and i had the same problem. this will keep your engine cooler. also if you don't want your air on just turn on your windshield defrosters (not the back windshield) and that helps keep your engine cool because your defrosters use your air compressor which is really your ac. so it still kicks the fans on earlier.

Check rad fan is operating. It should be coming on when temperature reaches normal operating temperature. Possibly fan shot or relay to fan is malfunctioning.

Have you checked for Diagnostic Fault Codes yet? Have your local auto parts store check for codes if you don't have access to a code reader. New Bluetooth OBD readers (ELM327) that pairs with your smartphone or laptop and a free app. (Called "Torque") Great reader for under $20 in most cases. Start there first. Is there a Temp Gauge for coolant? If so.......what is the operating temp doing during those highway trips? If the coolant is overheating, it may be heating the transmission too.
1. Check for codes.
2. Have cooling system checked, cleaned, flushed, and new coolant installed.

Overheating impala

What you are describing is a lack of coolant flow in the engine or radiator, or lack of air flow thru the radiator.
If you are sure the coolant level is ok, and flow is good, I would check for a restriction in air flow thru the condenser and radiator.

Truck Stalls when ideling in traffic

I don't know what the STP cleaner may have done; I had a similar problem where my car would idle very low when stopped or in a drive-through waiting. It turns out there was black soot on the engine intake. I disconnected the rubber hose from the air filter at the engine (take cover off, loosen 1 clamp). I used a spray can of throttle body cleaner and wiped the area clear. I then had my dealer perform the programming change for a service bulletin that mentions throttle body coking.
