Check the clutch master cylinder for fluid level, if it is full and your clutch pedal feels fine, then your clutch probally needs replacing. There is a 1% chance it could be the throwout bearing fork, but trans will still need to be pulled for repairs.

Gear shifting is hard to impossible

Synchronize the gears is what a trans does when you shift it, the part that makes this possiable is a part called a sycronizer ring, if they (4 of them) wear out prematurely then you end up with a hard shift issue, does this answer your question? I do assume your clutch is ok?

Sounds like air has gotten into the hydraulic clutch system, or it is low on fluid from a failed master or slave hydraulic clutch cylinder or connecting line between the master and slave cylinders.
