I just stopped for gas and when i restarted on the highway, my transmission will not shift above 2nd gear either automatically in drive or when i shift up manually through the gate. the check transmission light is also on.

the fluid level checks out good and i have disconnected the battery for ten minutes to reset the cpu but it did not clear up the problem.

You have a shift solenoid sticking, it may start working again on it's own, but here is the 1st thing we do in the shop, if the trans has not been serviced (60,000) we do that, many times clean fluid and a new filter cure the issue, if that doesn't cure the problem the trans pan must be dropped and the solenoids and wiring connectors tested. My experience, 20 years as a Ford dealer technician.

What does it mean when my 96 Lincoln Continental won't shift from 2nd to 3rd gear and is it safe to drive it like that?

It is safe to drive but the car is running in too low a gear at high speed and this will result in greater engine wear and lower gas mileage.

You have a transmission problem.

Can i drive in other gears on the highway besides being in drive...I have a 99 Lincoln continental? ?

you should use the highest gear possible to allow over drive to kick in, other gears will slow and limit the speed you can drive ,and stress the tranny

Trans shifting hard between 1st & 2nd gear

Could be internal wear but it is worth changing the transmission oil as it can help. Also check the gear linkage which might need adjusting.

My 97 lincoln Continental go's forward just fine. I can feel the transmission shift into reverse but will not move. If I give it the gas the engine speed stops at about 1500 rpm

The TCM or transmission control module may be bad or a stuck trans. shift soleniod. It may be worth it just to take it to a certified transmission shop to have them run a diagnostic check to retrieve the TCM's trouble codes then go from there.

1998 LINCOLN CONTINENTAL TRANSAXLE NOISE

Is it possible that the sound is happening every time you hit 14 mph after a fresh start? The TC does a ABS check 14 mph that runs the pump for a second.

Re: 1998 lincoln continental transmission. i just stopped for gas and when i restarted on my way, the transmssion will not shift above 2nd gear either automatically from the drive position or as i manually...

The last time I experienced this the gearbox governor gear (which are usually made of plastic had lost its drive teeth. Did you notice if the speedo still worked.
