97 Pontiac Sunfire Head Gasket Leaking -

In your solution below you indicate GM is voluntarily repairing head gaskets for the 97 Pontiac Sunfire. Where can I find this information officially to take to my Pontiac service dealer? Solution #3 posted on May 14, 2008

Sunfires ****. I had a '96 for two years. You name the problem, and I'll
tell ya that I had it.

$9000 in warranty work done in ONE year.

GM's low level cars really are lemons. The top end ones are really nice
though.

The main problems you may see with a '97 Sunfire will be a leaking head gasket which GM is voluntarily repairing out of warranty, a faulty water pump which will end up putting coolant into your 2.4DOHC and over time will destroy it.

you could have a bad intake gasket that is allowing coolant to go into oil. if the head gasket is good then the other thing it could be is a crack in the engine.

Leaking antifreeze from around top of motor behind the thermostat

Many thermostats have a gasket installed between the thermostat housing and the engine block / waterpump. If the the thermostat is bolted securely - you may need to remove the thermostat and replace the gasket. While you're there - swap out the thermostat too. It's one of those "Two birds / one stone" kind of thing. See the "..Blown Head Gasket..." link below.

How much would it cost to fix the head gasket pontiac sunfire 1999

If you get a Haynes or Chilton's repair manual on your vehicle and do it yourself, about $60 for the Head Gasket. If you have a shop do it about $200.

Loosing coolant, but there is nothing leaking.i am adding coolant every day

it is getting sucked into the engine through a crack or bad gasket.
needs attention ASAP. take a sniff at the tailpipe for antifreeze odor, or look for foam on the bottom of the oil fill cap. ain't good.

97 2.2L is leaking coolant, about a full tank every 5-7 days. Water pump and associated hoses look dry, can't find the source of the leak. Any suggestions?

sounds like a head gasket if no leaks are visible, but you must be sure. any wet floors especially the front passenger side if so could indicate heater core leak

YOU COULD HAVE A DEFECTIVE WATER PUMP OR THERMOSTAT ALSO RADIATOR PRESSURE CAP.MAKE SURE YOUR WATER PUMP IS BEING TURNED BY DRIVE BELT.NOT SLIPPING.MAKE SURE COOLANT SYSTEM HAS BEEN BLED AND YOU HAVE HALF ANTIFREEZE HALF WATER.CHECK YOUR CRANKCASE WHEN CAR COOLS DOWN.IF OIL STILL LOOK LIKE MILK SHAKE.YOUR NEW HEAD GASKETS LEAKING.THE MECHANIC WHO REPLACED HEAD GASKET DIDNT DECK THE HEADS.THEY PROBABLY NEED SHAVED A LITTLE SO HEAD GASKET WILL SEAL.

If your timing is off you will have no power.check and make sure all timing mark's are correct. Some engine's are contact motor's,which mean's if your timing is off you could cause damage to valve's or piston's.Also you should do a compression test to be sure each cylinder has adequite pressure.Hope this help's.

This is done on a case by case basis, worked for GM know how it works, request a meeting at the dealer with the local field service rep, tell him what u know and have read, also say there is no way this problem should happen in this low a miles car, chances are he will go for it, at worst u will pay a small deductiable, don't turn that down, it lets GM save face.
