Jeep seems to slip into neutral when the brake is on
I have a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 4.0 6 cyl. engine. The jeep has 4x4 SelecTrac. Recently, at times, when I am at a stop light the car does not seem to be in drive when I hit the gas...the engine revs, the car does not move...then suddenly will **** forward...almost like I am in nuetral..but the car is always in the Drive position. Any advice?

With the Jeep in park, move the left shifter to 4 wheel drive. Proceed to put right shifter into drive, proceed to drive. Only use 4wheel drive when neccessary...ie...snow, mud, use 4 wheel lo in steep incline or when really bogged down.
I have a jeep wrangler and to have it towed you are suppose to put the transverecase in neutral after you first depress brake pedal put trans in neutral then start engine shift auto trans into drive release brake pedal make sure there is no movement, shut engine off with key left in acc position shift auto trans into park, disconnect neg battery cable (damage can result in trans if shifted into park while transvere case is in neutral with engine running) you should refere to your owners manuel
this switch does not switch the vehicle from 2 wheel to 4 wheel drive. Grand cherokee have a manual shifter for that. The 4x4 switch is on top of the transfer case and tells the driver information display what 4 wheel drive mode the Jeep is in. ex..if you have selectrac, in 2 wheel the rear wheels on the display will light up, in 4 wheel all 4 wheels will light up, in 4 wheel low it will have the word low lit up in yellow. This is the only purpose for this switch and a bad one will not affect the functioning of the 4 wheel drive. Check out Rockauto.com and a new one can be purchased for about 35 dollars. If you call the dealership and ask for a 4 wheel drive switch, they will have no clue what you are talking about. The actual name is " 4WD indicator light switch"
How long have you owned this vehicle, is this a new problem? If your new to the jeep 4x4, you might not realise that you must be rolling very slowly in neutral or at least in newtral without your foot on the brake in order to egage 4 low. Not trying to be patronizing, just dont know your experience. This could solve your problem because you may not actualy be in any gear.
There are essentially three different transfer cases used in 95. Generally slipping out of gear is caused by partial engagement, requiring linkage adjustment, or by internal wear of case componets. I would have either checked by a reliable competent trans shop. An at-home rebuild is not impossible but parts are not cheap and a small mistake can ruin an otherwise good job. Good luck with it!
