1997 Dodge Caravan Serpentine Belt

I was driving and I heard a snap and then the battery light came on the dash board and there was loss of power steering. Then the water light came on and the temp was really hot and I stopped and turned the car off (All this happened within 2 minutes). I got out and opened the hood and then looked under the car and there was a belt hanging. My best guess is it is the serpentine belt because it is really long and seems to hook to several things. The belt is not broken or anything and I really don't know why or how it came off. So how can I put it back on or should I get a new one and if so how do I put that one on? What are the chances of damage to other things than the belt from driving for 2 minutes without this belt hooked up?

Yes that would be a serpentine belt, go to auto store and buy a new one. NO damage had been done most likely. There is a belt tensioner that has a hole that a ratchet will fit in, you have to push on that which releases the tension. There should be a sticker that shows you the routing under the hood by top of radiator. Can be done with 1 person but 2 makes it much easier.

I would old one back on for now until you can find the problem... it can be many things.. it can be a bad pulley on the alternator.. ..water pump.... power stering pump....on the crankshaft..... the belt tensioner pulley.. or it could be a old belt that is streched. ...once you get the belt put back on it will be easier to tell what the problem is..... hopes this helps.. you can drive it for 2mins without causing damage

SOURCE: serpentine belt diagram:

The belt routing diagram is located on the top radiator cross member by the hood latch. You should see it when you open the hood. If it is not there, all Chrysler, Dodge, and Plymouth minivans, from 1993 to at least 1999, used the same 3.3L engine setup, so find someone with one and look for the diagram where I described.

SOURCE: need a diagram of the serpentine belt on a 96 caravan

The diagram should be located under the hood close to the radiator. It should be a black sticker with the diagram in white lettering. Look towards the passenger side near the front of the motor.

I will look at my manual for my 2000 Voyager. They should be close to the same. If you do not find the diagram under the hood comment back and I will get you a photo of the belt drive out of the manual for engine you have. If I can!! What engine do you have??

SOURCE: Need serpentine belt routing diagram for 1994 Dodge grand caravan

Looking at the engine from front (right side of the Van): Stating at the Top, Going Left to Right and Clockwise:
Over the Alternator
To under the Idle Pulley,
To Over the AC Compressor.
To the Left Side of the Water Pump.
To the Right side and Under the Crankshaft Pulley
To the Right side and Over and Down the Tensioner
To Under the Power Steering Pump
And Back up-to the Left side of the Alternator.
Advise when puting it on:
Put the Belt around everything else accept for the Alternator. After it is around all the rest of the Pulleys - Pull the belt up - tight from the Power steering Pump and the Idle Pulley to form a loop, holding the Belt close to the Altenator Pulley.
Using the 15mm wrench or belt tensioner bar - rotate the Tensioner Pulley towards the front of the Van and then place the belt over the Alternator.

mcdevito75 here, Sounds like you have a problem under the dash with the main harness wireing as it comes thru the dash board from the firewall or at a connection under the dash board. Or if your dash board is controlled by a circuit board. Best Bet, Have an electrical auto shop in your area take a look, many things to take apart under the dash and you may make the problem worse with out realizeing it, no matter how versed you are with cars.

It sounds a lot like the accessory drive belt was slipping. Check the tension of the belt. It should be hard to flip it upside down with your fingers. I would say the rain was enough for the power steering and alternator pulleys to start slipping.
